DD(16) is changing schools for sixth form and is going to a private/boarding school but only as a day student and we’re both a little confused by the medication rules. At her old school students were encouraged to be responsible for their own medication and such (but could be left with the medical staff is preferred) but at her new school it says that they will administrate non-prescription medicines- does this include 400mg ibuprofen and co-codamol? Just wondering because DD takes both for period cramps but we have to buy both from a pharmacist. It’s not prescription so I can’t see why I’d need to fill out all of those forms. Do you think there’d be any issues if she handled her own painkillers? Anyone else been in a similar situation?

I don't know about boarding schools, but how exactly is it worded?

DS's school will administer non-prescription medicine e.g. if you go the medical room with a headache, they will give you paracetomal.
But students can equally just keep their own medication with them.

At 16 your DD can consent to her own health care, so not even sure why the school is requiring parents to fill in medical related forms!

At 16 don't they just take their own painkillers?

@RedskyAtnight I think that’s what it’s like at DD’s new school but I’m not sure how it works for period cramps because we know that typical painkillers don’t help her. I think the forms are only for prescription meds that are taken during the school day like antibiotics which I can understand for the younger students but not so much for the seniors.

The medication forms we've always had to fill out for ours (eldest has boarded for last 8 years) have basically been agreeing to a list of things that they can supply and administer if required; and we could say no to individual items on the list if we wished. I would imagine it is simplest to have a standard parental permission form for this stuff across the whole school, so if they need to go to the school nurse they can just be given what they need. It shouldn't, at 6th form level, prevent them having their own self-administered supplies, within reason. Might be prudent to let the school know she might be carrying cocodamol at times.

It needs to be prescribed by a doctor, dentist or pharmacist for them to give to her. It’s same with calpol for younger children. Just needs the pharmacy to attach their name and dosing instructions.
