Secondary schools near Winchmore Hill

Hi. We are considering moving to Winchmore Hill or near there, from SE London, so need some local knowledge. Can anyone advise on secondaries for my son?

  • Not religious
  • Not selective
  • Exam results important but more than that need somewhere able to support his emotional/behavioural needs. Not SEN, but a strong SEN department would be a good indicator.

Thank you.

Are you looking for a state or private school? if state, have a look at winchmore secondary (link included to website). They are rated good by ofsted and you can read more about their SEN support on the website. If private, have a look at dwight secondary. They follow the IB program, and have a great SEN support network. You can read more about why the IB program can be beneficial for SEN children here.

all the best x

Hello. Having done more research and spoken to staff at several schools we have narrowed it down to either Southgate School or Winchmore School.
We are of course hampered by there being no proper open evenings, so I'd really appreciate if anyone with experience of either school could let me have their thoughts on merits/drawbacks. This could be general experience or specifically related to social/emotional/behavioural needs.
Many thanks!

Either of those are good. Just stay clear of Edmonton County.

Thank you! Do you have a child at either?

My son has friends in Southgate School and it was on our list, it has a very good local reputation. We went to their open day and I was impressed, the buildings are slightly tired looking but I think it's a very good school. Don't know anything or anyone at Winchmore so can't comment on that

Highlands is very well regarded however hard to get in due to catchment and being oversubscribed. I have friends whose kids go to Winchmore-they all wanted Highlands as their first choice. Their kids are happy now at Winchmore but both mums said yr 7 was tough.
Theres also the newly opened Wren Enfield -I'm not sure if you will be in the catchment though in Winchmore Hill. It's a Church school however my son goes to the Finchley Wren ( yr13) and he isn't religious and the intake is very mixed religion wise so I wouldn't let that put you off applying.

@Nic123456 - I know it's a few years old now, but which schools did you visit/engage with, and which did you select? Any Feedback would be appreciated. We are looking for:

  • Not religious
  • Not selective
  • Strong SEN Support
