Y12 return to school from June 15th

How many days has your Y12 child been offered? Our school has emailed to say students will be offered 2 days of contact. That's 2 days in total. I haven't misread it; I know the dates. One day in June, the other in the second week of July. My DC's initial response was not favourable.
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting full time hours or anything like it, but 2 days doesn't seem all that beneficial to me.

Our school surveyed the year group and I believe only 8 are being offered 3 mornings next week. Only.

I'm not sure what the criteria was, but my yr 12 thinks it's those who are particularly vulnerable or with special needs.

Juanmorebeer · 04/06/2020 21:21

Year 12? So their A levels were cancelled so presumably the two days are just for them to say goodbye to their peers/teachers and collect any work or belongings?

BreconBeBuggered · 04/06/2020 21:28

That would be Y13, Juanmorebeer. Y12 are due to sit A levels in 2021.

1 day a week from the 15th.
Not normal classes though but better than nothing. Should set them up to continue studying all most of the summer, so they haven't missed anything.

KittyMcKitty · 04/06/2020 22:11

The school my year 10 & 12 are at aren’t having them in. They have a good online provision and are sticking with that.

raspberryrippleicecream · 04/06/2020 23:36

Two days per subject (5 hours each day), over the give wedks. So 8 days in school altogether. The remote provision is excellent and DS2 is doing fine, so we are undecided. School is clear these days are 'extra' and the remote provision will remain. The Year 10s are on a 1 day in 4 rota for the five weeks.

mudpiemaker · 05/06/2020 07:49

I think the government's stipulation over only having a certain percentage of students in scuppered pre-planned returns. So my year 12 son was meant to have 3 x 2hour sessions a week, either a morning or afternoon session, not on the same day and only if their current teacher was available, if not, online learning which has been extensive.

Ds2 is at a secondary school in the same trust. They say they are only allowed 25% of pupils on site at one time and are not allowed to swap out the pupils, ie you can't have one set of pupils in the morning and a different set in the afternoon, so the 2 hour sessions or morning sessions have been scrapped and the year 10s are now in for a full day instead in pods of 10.

We are waiting to hear from the sixth form, they are due to go back on 15th June but the sixth form would normally only be open for another 3 weeks. It closes 2 weeks earlier than school does. Ds1 had a university summer school booked which has now become an online course.

Fredella · 05/06/2020 13:48

My DS is being offerd 1 day a week from w/c 15th, so 5 days in all.

25% of pupils in each day.

He also has a university summer school which has been swapped to online only.

Chasingsquirrels · 05/06/2020 14:09

Email yesterday - they won't be going back before the end of term and online learning to continue, although they will be inviting those that they feel need it to undertake the online learning on site but with support, this is be limited to 50 (out of 1,250 in the year group).

At my daughter's school they are going back for a total of two and a half days! There has been very little interaction with the school, no online teaching at all and the very little work set.

Little feedback on work they did hand in. From what I can gather some kids at the school are themselves more proactive and contact their teachers themselves, talk about what they should do etc but the ones who don't take that initiative are left just not really doing anything.

The contrast between what is happening in different schools is shocking. I have friends with kids in other local schools where they have morning registration, structured days, online lessons and so on.

Year 12s across the country won't be going into Year 13 on an equal basis at all. I assume A levels can't be examined in the same way next year.

Placesrobe76 · 07/06/2020 11:17

None for our year 12; they are only offering it to those they think really need it. He isn’t seen as one that is struggling so misses out.

sleepwouldbenice · 08/06/2020 00:12

Ours has been very behind. No real time teaching. Last min plans to bring in 8 kids a day (across 2 %year groups) from 15th
A grammar school so theoretically less pressure for keeping pupils up to dare

Lasvegas · 08/06/2020 23:01

State secondary G London. Last 4 weeks before end of year 12, they have 2/3 hours of 60 min lessons each week at school.

DD has had one zoom class since school closed in March. Rest of time told to read text book for sociology. And nothing for drama or literature.
How can anyone take exam Sumer 21 without being taught the syllabus. It’s madness.

GraceCharles1613 · 10/06/2020 13:14

Just been told that my son’s top grammar school will not open to his yr group (12) despite today’s govt advice to do so. Too many children, no school transport running, are all mentioned as excuses. A levels next year, and I’m feeling devastated for him. Limited on-line lessons offered. Basically, they’re just set tasks via email. It is frustrating, knowing there will be children having face-to-face lessons again at another schools, albeit limited. I am so anxious for my son.

Londonmummy66 · 12/06/2020 16:59

Been told today that DC can have a 30 1:1 with tutor, a discussion of distance learning experience with some other pupils and a PE lesson - just the one half day between now and the end of term..... It just doesn't seem worth it.

THF the online teaching is good and they don't want to disrupt that in any way.

hopelesschildren · 13/06/2020 02:13

None, school closed

MrsAvocet · 13/06/2020 02:35

My son is being offered one half day in school (2.5 hours) for each of his A levels plus some small group tutorials online, the details of which are yet to be confirmed.

flamingochill · 13/06/2020 16:27

Mine's getting 1 hour live teaching for 4 days every week and 1 half day at school every week.

Typos hard decisions

reluctantbrit · 13/06/2020 19:06

Y10 and 12 are going for 3 hours each day, each cohort is split in 4 groups (normally 8 forms), two are going in the morning, two after lunch. They are split in groups of 15 and are sitting all over the school. 3 hours mean 3 lessons with 60 minutes, they stay in their room and the teacher go to them.

The Y12 have their own block and are just 100 in total compared to 240 Y10.

They do main subjects, Maths, Science, English and MFL.

In addition they continue with remote learning for all other subjects at least 3 more hours each day.

boys3 · 13/06/2020 19:20

6 days in total back in for DS3 - first one due 15th itself. We'll see how it goes - online teaching has varied dramatically by subject.

eatthatfrog · 13/06/2020 21:26

my Y12 is finishing exams remotely week 15th June then lessons resume online 22nd June full timetable. Will have 1 day in school before they break up mainly for catch up with form tutor and to focus on UCAS application possibly discuss EPQ. She has had full timetable via teams since lockdown started

nancypineapple · 14/06/2020 16:23

My yr 12 ds is going in for 4 hours per subject so 12 hours in total. His north London comp have worked hard on their online provision and they have sat their mocks and been given their predicted A level grades. My son thinks he has studied much more online during lockdown then previously ( he was working over the weekend and one weeknight, swam 3 nights and then fitted in his social life around this!) 12 hours doesn't seem a lot though however it's better than nothing. He is looking forward to seeing all his mates again so I feel he should definitely go in if only for the social aspect.

Lunar567 · 18/06/2020 23:29

My daughter was offered 2 days at school only.
First day was today. She said it was awful.
5 students in a big room, desks 5 m apart, hardly possible to talk to each other. And other students were not even from her classes.
She had a little chat with her French teacher. That's it. They were just sitting with their laptops doing nothing. And after that they were accompanied out at different time to other groups. She said she would not go back next week. I am so sad for her.
This is one of the best schools in the country. I am very disappointed with the school. The online teaching is minimal.
