Grammar School from Gidea Park

Hi, my daughter is still in nursery so it might be a bit early to thing about secondary? but need idea as we are planning to buy a house.
We are in Gidea Park, Essex and quite happy to look for a house in this area.
I heard primary in the area is good in here but not for secondary..
We are keen that she takes 11+ in future.

I wonder in reality, is it hard to get a place to any grammar school in Essex of Redbridge from outside of catchment area?

Any comment would be really appreciated;)

Destroyedpeople · 25/05/2020 23:55

Sorry mistake. How can you know about eleven plus when she is just in nursery?

phon · 26/05/2020 00:05

Yes, you are right.. we don't know if there is 11+ that time! I know that it might be too early to think but I want to know current situation to have some idea;)

Currently:

Redbridge (Woodford County High): hell will freeze over before anyone from outside the Common Catchment Area gets in. CCA is all of Redbridge plus all of Waltham Forest plus a few small slivers of adjoining LAs to stop them having their catchment area reported to the OSA again. Map on the LB Redbridge website.

Essex and Southend (CSSE) grammar schools: Colchester County High has no priority admissions area. Southend High School for Girls and Westcliff High School for Girls both actually reserve places for those applying from outside the priority admissions area (which is postcodes SS0 - SS9 inc).
Chelmsford County High School for Girls has a different exam from the Colchester end Southend grammar schools. In area (12.5 mile radius) applicants have priority for the majority of places, 20% then to anyone on score.

Admissions policies have to be determined each year by the beginning of March for entry 18 months hence - so at the moment, each school's policy for 2021 entry will be the latest one available. So, if your DD is due to start secondary school in, say, 2028, the schools will have their admissions policies available at this time of year in 2027 and so on. And they can change quite a lot over time. Or the schools may not even be academically selective at all by then. No-one has a crystal ball.

wow! Thank you so much for the explanation, that helps me a lot to understand.
In reality, how is it like to apply grammar school from outside the catchment compare to being within catchment?
Would it be really hardship?

I don't know these grammar schools but in answer to your question (and reading MarchingFrogs information, your DD would need to score in top 20% of places. So say they offer 180 places, she would have to be in the top 36 places. It's not impossible, as someone will be, but obviously far harder than needing to be in the top 180. There is also the possibility they will change things and have more/less/no places for those out of the area.

I would try not to worry. I know plenty of children who went to local secondary schools who had a great education and are either at the uni of their choice or have finished their education and got the perfect job or are still at school and it’s okay!
Frances B, Redden C, Royal Lib then moving further out Bower, Marshals, HM. What’s the one called that used to be a grammar and was churchy? Honestly, they’re all fine.

Although of course some children do go private from Gidea Park and some to the grammars. You can’t tell which went where a few years down the line, well I don’t think you can!

Thanks for the comments, they are very useful!!

It's a dilemma for me to decide where to settle down, either prioritise my daughters education or i and my partners quality of life, such as bigger house, commuting, finance etc..
We had been to area to see what they like such as Chelmsford that grammar school/good secondary are there but my partner doesn't prefer it to commute by car to Ilford, he thinks it's too stressful.

We may have more time to think about her while she grows up if it's preferable to persuade her to go grammar school I guess..?
