private school fees

How on earth will even current boarders at private schools be able to afford 70k for Eton per child pa? And even day schools will be like 35k, crazy - do you think our kids will inevitably have less kids and marry later or will these institutions just shrink? or will they be forced to increase at a lower rate - it's unsustainable??
I know most people can't afford private skl etc but the rate of inflation of fees is crazy compared to the fees say a generation or two ago.

Where are you getting this information from?

nolanscrack · 01/05/2020 12:51

Odd that we parents havent been told about this, thought Eton might have mentioned it...Hmm

toughgetsgoing · 01/05/2020 14:21

They literally go up by 1k a year sometimes 2, usually in between, unsustainable and at a point it has to stop??

DD's fees aren't going up at all for next year.

Can you clarify what you are talking about - is this some news article or other?

SoupDragon · 01/05/2020 14:28

the rate of inflation of fees is crazy compared to the fees say a generation or two ago.

I wonder if there is a link to the corresponding difference in salaries...

Delta1 · 01/05/2020 14:46

Sorry I'm confused. What are you talking about OP? Fees go up, as a general rule of thumb, about 5% per annum

Delta1 · 01/05/2020 14:48

Eton is £45k p.a. Not £70.

HermanHermit · 01/05/2020 14:50

@Delta1 OP is assuming that parents pay out of earned income, which agreed for a large % of Erin is not the case

HermanHermit · 01/05/2020 14:51

Eton not Erin of c

Delta1 · 01/05/2020 14:53

Ah I see. Well I guess the answer is that you do the maths in advance. You build in a
5% year on year increase. You ensure you have a couple of years fees in the bank just in case. Or you accept you can't go to such an expensive school.

Delta1 · 01/05/2020 14:54

As far as I'm aware it's been 5% for a fair while no? Nothing much has changed.

Summersunandoranges · 01/05/2020 15:10

Ours went up slightly at the beginning of the year and it was very competitive with other surrounding private schools. No where near the £1000 your talking about though where are you getting your info from?

avocadoze · 02/05/2020 21:39

Actually I think Eton is £42.5k per year. Which, to be fair, might as well be £70k per year for the vast majority of the population. Fortunately for us and for over a fifth of the other boys, Eton is determined to widen access, and it offers means-tested bursaries. Quite a few of the boys’ families don’t pay anything. Not sure where the OP is getting these numbers from.
