Transfer from independent to grammar / sort after comp at sixth form

Hello

How easy is this to do? Would the grammars give preference to pupils from state schools if grades (albeit IGCSE) are the same/better?

Thank you

You need to check each one. At one time our local sixth form college gave preference to those from state schools with no sixth form, then other state schools and private only if spaces but that seems to have changed over recent years and fewer if any are refused places. However moving to state then may not give any advantage in uni applications.

If you are really only encouraging your DC to move because you think it will improve their chances of getting univetsity offers, then surely you would be targeting local RI comps, not sought after ones or grammar schools (and even then, the university would look at where their GCSEs were taken as well).

Look at the sixth form admissions policy for the schools you are interested in - state schools have to adhere to their published admissions policies, so if in oversubscription, preference is given, say, to those meeting the minimum criteria attending local schools with no sixth form, this should be stated.

Thank you. It's not for reasons of university applications (what will be, will be), but changing financial circumstances.

Ie worth remortgaging to keep in a fantastic independent, or is there the opportunity to get them into a fantastic state school at sixth form.

The places for 6th for our local grammars are based on grades - doesn’t matter which school the child was at previously

Losingitallthetime · 30/04/2020 13:31

Thank you ittakestwo. I wonder whether they will view iGCSE's on parity with GCSE's?

As Lizs says , locally at our state 6th form college there is priority to the private school with no 6th form over the one with a 6th form. That said have heard there are kids from both private schools at the college so obviously there are the spaces in this case.

Unis don't give lower (contextual) offers to all state school applicants anyway. The school has to have a contextual flag which is because it has a high proportion of disadvantaged children or a low historical rate of uni application etc.

The sought after Comps and Grammars won't for those criteria so there will be no lower offers. It is a common misconception that any state school gets lower offers. Ha - the kids in Grammars and the leafy Comps can be as affluent and privileged as those in Independnet schools in many cases.

SeasonFinale · 01/05/2020 10:20

Igcses will be fine.

Losingitallthetime · 01/05/2020 10:52

Thank you SeasonFinale. That is reassuring

Again, I'm not looking at this because of university applications. I'm a believer in doing what's best (as per your individual family circumstances) in the only moment you have, which is now

We’re doing this in September. Dd currently has offers from an outstanding comp, a grammar and a sixth form college. The grammar offered based on predicted grades (although the other grammar we looked at does after-results offers only so actual grades) - no reference to IGCSEs or previous school.

The college seems to offer to almost everyone with predicted grades over their baseline. The comp offers based on predicted grades and home address/distance if oversubscribed.

Thank you crazycrofter

I hope it goes well for your DD at her new school

Thank you! We’re also not doing it for uni entrance or anything like that. Dd wanted a co-Ed environment and a slightly more ‘normal’ one and we could do with a financial break!

Hope it works out for you. Open evenings are usually in the Autumn - hopefully!

There is a GDST school nesr us and many transfer at sixth form as they’ve been at the same school since reception and whilst not bad, just like your DD they are ready for a change. The girls end up at a range of co-Ed grammar sixth forms and independent co-Ed sixth forms.

Some schools have a week away before school starts that helps with bonding etc, - not quite certain how that works if you’re not 100% certain of attending due to grades but I’ve heard of them happening.
