The government has said that no child will be adversely affected by the corona closing schools and not running exams this summer. Now that they have also said that there may not be many exams possible in Autumn either will there not be a good chance that a fair few a level students this year may decide to redo the year to take their exams next year. Even if they did do exams in the Autumn, this would mean that the present yr12s would have extra competition to get into university.
If there are Autumn exams then this would definitely put yr 12s at a disadvantage as their grades would only be confirmed in August whereas yr 13s would have theirs in possibly January or February. Universities are bound to prefer confirmed grades?
Am I the only one who is thinking too far ahead? I know it's only speculation.

You’re speculating that there’s lots of Y13s who will want to retake. Given that they should be getting the grades they deserve in August and that universities will be flexible and most likely lenient with offers, anyone who wants to go to uni in September should be able to find a place.

What might be a concern is current Y13 deciding that they don’t want to go to a socially distanced university in September and taking a gap year. Tbh the social side of uni is a big draw so I wouldn’t blame them.

I think the universities will be offering places to anyone who can write their own name this year - how many overseas students will they have lost.

I'm not sure many Y13s will re-sit. They might have got a a C instead of a B, but they've got into their first choice uni - would you re-sit?

I think they might take a gap year though - I've head freshers weeks might be cancelled and the social side of uni life is going to be a bit shit next year.

I agree delightful. No overseas student of sound mind is going to pay £30k a year to a British university for an online education they can access from their kitchen table.
I think there will be some very generous offers for UK students to attend this year even if it is partly online because some income is better than no income.
