Secondary school fees next sept

Does anyone expect the private secondary school fees to be reduced in september? They're already the highest in Europe and needs to come down specially after so many people unexpectedly loosing their jobs or Taken big cuts?

Some schools have already said they will be.

Fees may or may not have been reduced for thebsummer ter,m - closure was not long before the billing point, duration of closure unknown, new ways of working not yet established etc.

But reduction in fees for interruption to provision in the summer term might come off the autumn bill (some have already announced this). Also planned fee increased in the autumn might be deferred by one or more terms.

Has you school,said anything yet?

If not, then ask (you won't be either the first or the only parent doing that)

They surely only need to come down if 1) they are not operating as normal or 2) they are struggling to fill their spaces?

Private schools are businesses and will respond to supply and demand. Those with massive waiting lists which are full aren’t going to cut fees across the board. They will hope that those struggling with fees will approach them and see what they can do.

I don't think they will be reduced unless there is distance learning again. Schools have to pay 23% of each teachers salary into the govt run teachers pension scheme. Around 70-80% of fees income goes out on the wage bill. What you may see is the reduction is specialist teachers so the dropping of the 3rd MFL or dance etc.

Our school has promised no increase in the autumn term, on the assumption they’ll be back up and running as usual. But if they’re not, I would expect the same discount (10%, with more to come if they make more savings than they expect) as they’ve offered for the summer term, with the option to pay as usual and for the extra to go towards bursaries as needed.

SeasonFinale · 21/04/2020 09:46

Ours has announced there will be no increase but there won't be a discounted rate for a school that has 10 applicants for each place and when an in year place comes up it is snapped up.

Depending on which part of the school there has been a 17.5% to 22.5% discount during closure and I would expect similar may be given of there are further closures in the next school year.

Obviously some schools are not in such an advantageous position. However if parental pressure is such so as to insist upon decreases that mean cuts which impact on the education why would you want your child to go there? Now is the time to support the school who with you is likely to have the most influence on the shaping of your child.

My daughters school have decided there will be no fee increase in the Michaelmas term this year. If they are not back in school there will be a 20% fee reduction.

We have been told no increase in Sept for autumn term and review for Jan over summer.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Sittinonthefloor · 21/04/2020 19:25

No, not if the schools are going to survive.

lockdownstress · 22/04/2020 11:16

@WombatChocolate I wonder if our kids are at the same school! 15% off for all, more for years R - 4, no increase for September and review in January.
