How to motivate year 10 to engage in online learning? Summer School?

Hi,
I am trying to find things to help my teen understand that this is not a 'jolly' that he needs to learn what's being taught this term even if it is being delivered via online learning.

I feel really sorry for him as it is really hard to concentrate and remain engaged on things that are not that easy or not that interesting and doubly hard when it's via a computer and you are at home.

Any hints out there on what you are doing to try and support your teens at this important educational time?

I would very much support school being open in the summer (if the virus allows) to allow the kids the chance to learn in person.

I'm going to have the same issue with my y10 DD, who struggles academically and has been having MH issues since before this kicked off.

I'm going to have to oversee quite closely what she does to make sure she gets best value from what she can do, prioritising core subjects that she needs for college.

Motivation wise it is carrot and stick here. Agree what will be done each day and limit TV until done.

However I do think if school doesn't restart before the summer then DD will need a 'normal' summer holidays, going out and about where she can control the level of crowds she is happy with, rather than 'school'.

Carrot and stick, routine - it gets done before other things and checking up what's been done and constant talk about how important it is to keep working and hoping some part of that mix does the trick.

My Yr 8 at same school has had a lot more set work than my year 10.

For DD1 it was at the start all vauge 'revise' - we're in Wales and she was due to be sitting final exam in one subject and end of unit GCSE exams in 6 more. Now the guidlines about what is happning are out she is a bit more motivated.

We're relying on Senca a lot and I've kept Tassmai going - and said may start paying for second units on it as well soon. I'm hoping after Easter there'll be more from the teachers.

School won't be going back early in summer holiday here - the Welsh Government has already made that clear.

BBC is starting extra programs on 20 April to try and support learning as well.

Have you tried MyMaths or not? Their grade booster packs are perfect for revision and skill building in addition as well as improving confidence. I recommend it.
I have heard lots of good things as well about www.corbettmaths.co.uk and www.mathskitchen.co.uk as well. MathGenie is also another good website to use if you need exam practice too. They have lots of videos and exam papers for each grade of both tiers.

I think that year 10s are the worst affected by all of this. You can bet the farm that lots of schools will see this as a time to push an advantage in terms of providing work for their students and keeping on top of them. Does he understand how the curve works?

Could you talk to your son about what he hopes to achieve at GCSE and where he is planning after that? What is his plan B?

Now is the time to make mind maps and flashcards so he can test himself, and it allows others to test him. Quizlet will have loads of pre-made ones that other students have compiled themselves. There will be topics on there that he has already covered.
