What’s Burntwood like?

Daughter has just got offered a place at Burntwood. Does anyone have a child at the school who could tell me what it’s like? Preferably in current yr 7, 8, or 9 if that’s not too specific!!!

Thanks

Did you not visit it @cord?

Some of DD's school friends (got the 'selective' places) went there and seem to be enjoying it.

I liked it when we visited (DD didn't though - thought it too big) - great facilities and all very modern.

It's a very diverse multi-cultural school (I would say probably 75% of the girls are BME, reflecting the neighbourhood) with some boys in the sixth form.

There was an incident not so long ago (a year or perhaps two) when a small group of girls took Xanax on the school premises (and ambulances had to be called) - but that could have happened at just about any school...

Yes visited it last week after the offer as couldn’t get the time of work before and where we live doesn’t offer us many viable choices.
TBH my main concern is my daughter has enough girls she can get along with. I have friends’ daughters who are older & go there & seem to enjoy it but I had thought there would be slightly more of a mixed demographic.

Well, that was one of my few concerns about the school when we looked around. I think the nearby boys' school (Ernest Bevin) is similar. All of DD's friends who have gone there are from BME backgrounds, so possibly would have a different experience. It's not so much an issue of friendship groups in-school but can be when it comes to socialising at weekends (DD has close friends from Muslim backgrounds who are just not allowed to do the things the other girls do at the weekends).

Did your DD go with you, OP? If so, what did she think? And what was your gut feeling (don't ignore it!)?

You might want to start a new thread. This post is about a secondary school in SW London. Not sure if you're moving nearby or to a place called Burntwood?

Hello @Agnieszka16 this thread is about Burntwood School in south west London, a girls secondary school. Maybe start a new thread if you’re talking about a place called Burntwood?

Sorry @Hihohihoitsofftoworkmaybe didn’t see your post

I have a DD there in Y10. She's thoroughly enjoyed her time there and is doing very well academically and is involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. She is White British but has a mixed friendship group in terms of ethnicity. Personally I think that's one of the strengths of the school. Overall, from my experience I would recommend it to anyone.

From memory the Xanax issue was not on school grounds. It was some boys from another school who passed it onto some girls outside the gates.
