Hi,
My son didn't get any school from the preferred applied 5 schools. He could not meet the oversubscribed distance criteria for 2 of the preferred schools (missed by 0.2 miles) and other 3 schools in lottery. He got a school which is 3 miles away from my place. Can I appeal on the ground of medical conditions, which described below. Can anyone help on guiding me to write the appeal so that I can succeed.

  1. My son has motion sickness, for which he vomits during any travel by bus or train.
  2. Recently during visit to my home country, I visited doctor. Doctor advised him not to travel longer distance by bus or train. If he travels by bus or train, good Heath will be impacted. I have also the prescription of the doctor. Can I use this and show as a evidence. Can I mention that if I get a preferred school, which is only 0.6 miles, he can go by walk. Please advise.

Please guide me how to proceed with the appeal. Thanks in advance for your help.

On what grounds, op?

There is no template, although the school/local education authority will probably have a form for you to complete. Just set out your arguments as clearly and succinctly as you can, and attach the supporting statements from health care professionals.

I have a ds well into secondary who scooters to school.
He is unusual to do so but it seems totally accepted by his peers.
[Any initial comments were due to his not very stylish scooter but noone bothers now].
In fact see a lot of adults on scooters these days round our way so one day he maybe cool!

So he presumably never went on any school trips with the previous school - they should be able to give you a letter to say that you removed him from all trips due to his vomiting. I am confused though as to how he got to your home country?

Do secondary school aged children scooter to school in some parts of the country? Never seen that round here. Only primary aged.

Adults scooter here.

My school was less than three miles away. Everyone got the bus, no-one walked, at all in the late 80/early 90s. My parents would have never let me walk anyway as the route was at least partially rural and rather lonely.

I wouldn't want DC walking a six mile round trip every day, not with the amount of stuff they have to carry. I think people are being absolutely ridiculous suggesting this as the default option, not even knowing what the route may be. Cycling, maybe, but I still think this is a big risk on most UK roads. Walking or cycling this distance regularly might be ok for an adult going to work, but it's a lot less safe for a pre teen/teenager who are far more vulnerable. And let's face it - most adults are lazy and would drive that distance. If there were a group of them walking the same way it might be ok, but I certainly would not allow this as the default option for my DDs if they were walking alone.
