Tiffin Boys School

Our son has been lucky enough to be offered Tiffin Boys. However, he has also been offered Hampton. I understand all the benefits of Hampton but would like to know more about Tiffin as I know less about the school as we only the school once on a busy open evening . I understand than the sport is ok and the music is brilliant. The class sizes are bigger. The location is more convenient but no sports fields on site.

Specifically, what is the teaching like, pastoral care and discipline? Do the boys mix well? Any problems you've found with the bigger class sizes? Anything else? Focus on STEM, but what about humanities?

Thank you

I can’t answer your question but we had the same choice and have gone with Hampton. Mainly because of the sport at Hampton - no football at Tiffin which turned my son right off. Good luck

Thank you. Well done for making the decision. My son doesn't like football, so that is good for Tiffin,

If any Tiffin parents could let me know about the teaching etc, I would be very grateful.

I was browsing around the internet for fun when I came across this post. I'm a Tiffin student rather than a parent but I could give more information than any parent can wish to give.
This may be to late as you've probably already chosen a school but here goes:

  • the class sizes aren't a problem, distraction is generally minimal as everyone is, on average, very orderly.
  • the humanities are as strong as the sciences:
all the English teachers lead more discussion-based sessions as opposed to the dull teaching I hear happens at other schools

the philosophy department is one of the best departments in the school, goes way beyond the government curriculum; it is difficult to explain how astonishingly good this department is, it has fueled a passion for a subject I had no idea about before going to Tiffin.

the history department is sublime though I generally found it a bit of a dull subject but lots of people found it interesting so take my view with a pinch of salt.

If you're interested in classics, this is perhaps one of the best schools to go to simply because there are a good number of people enthusiastic about it and also you'll find the same enthusiasm in the teachers.

I hate German so I won't comment on modern foreign languages - it's decent but I can't stand the dullness of the lessons.

  • behaviour of everyone is as you'll expect from teenagers though it is hardly as bad as what some other places are like. We're all rowdy and obnoxious but no-one is ever cruel; the general rule is don't seek to annoy other people, if you aren't annoying, it's a pleasant environment.
  • the music department is great, nothing more to add.
