Hi, Year 9 DC choosing options - does it make any difference if he chooses hist or geog to be a secondary school teacher?

He wouldn’t teach these subjects - would be MFL or English..

I can't see why it would make any difference whatsoever. Choose the one he enjoys most.

The only difference (and I am not a fan of this but will be upfront) is that - at present- Geography PGCEs come with a big bursary. History is swimming with teachers. So, if DC changed their mind about A Levels at some point, geography affords more 'market potential' in teaching, apparently (no idea why ; my school has never struggled to recruit geographers : I suspect it is because they often have science A Levels)

That said, MFL has a high bursary, too, and we REALLY need MFL teachers, so I am pleased to hear of this career ambition!

English is rapidly falling off a cliff in terms of recruitment , too : but no one seems to care as the government encourages all DCs , whether male or female , to go into STEM, so the long term plan must be that fewer English teachers will be required, am guessing ...

Ann , male English teachers are like gold dust, by the way. Assuming they are any good!

Should have put this all in one post , so apols for wittering but, imo, history GCSE is a far better support and complement to English Lit GCSEs and A Level than geography.

Makes no odds at all then. Pick the one he prefers. Tho what piggy says makes sense. Get him to do MFL, at uni he'll have a good time if he likes girls (v female heavy dept always)
