GCSE exams clash

What happens?
DD has a clash - drama and Latin both scheduled for the same afternoon.
We brought it up with school, but all that we were told is that students used to have to stay overnight with teachers, but now it works on trust.
What does that mean, and who decides which exam is taken when?

DS had some exam clashes for his GCSEs.

He just sat one exam, then had a short supervised break, then sat the other exam.

There was one day on which he sat three exams, and it was fine.

If the total amount of time in exams in one day exceeds a set threshold, there may be the option of being supervised overnight, but it is rare for pupils to choose this.

He'll take one in the morning and be kept away from everyone till he sits the afternoon exam. Suggest packed lunch!

Fruityb · 23/02/2020 12:51

I had to sit three exams in one day for the clash I had - and that was 22 years ago lol. We had a supervised break during that time/

Ironoaks · 23/02/2020 12:51

I just checked the JCQ guidelines; for GCSEs there is no need for overnight supervision if the total exam time in one day is 5.5h or less.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/02/2020 12:51

Thanks for that info, Ironoaks.
DD has 25% extra time and already has another exam.in the morning, so I suspect she will go over the threshold.
The me!her of SLT we spoke to was definite that overnight supervision didn't happen anymore, but didn't say what has replaced it.

For the afternoon exam clash, DS started the first exam at the normal time (I think it was 1:30) then had a short supervised break, then sat the second exam.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/02/2020 12:54

Sorry, I missed subsequent responses whilst replying to Ironoaks.
I'll have a look at the total exam time scheduled, thanks.

If the total time goes over 5.5h and they decide to move one exam to the following day, this counts as a timetable variation and your DD and the overnight supervising adult both sign a declaration to say that she will not use her phone or access the internet overnight.

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2020 13:01

Or she can take them all in same day and have special consideration for the last exam of 2%.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/02/2020 13:03

Ah, ok, that makes sense of what the teacher said about working on trust.
DD does 90% of her revision using the internet, so I'll have a look at the exam subjects for the next day and plan accordingly, in the event that's the case.

DD had 3 exams on a single day, all timetabled at the same time, during her exams last year.

The pupils affected spent the day segregated from the cohort, but not from each other, in a separate room and supervised. IIRC, there was a longer break at one point (where they could use books and written material to revise) and one shorter break, when they had no access to revision materials.

I think they approached but did not exceed the 5.5 hour threshold.

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2020 16:20

Hi also. This happened with my DS1!

We had to sign something and keep his phone and laptop unless under supervision.

Piggywaspushed · 23/02/2020 16:23

Iirc they can have internet to revise if you watch over them. But pretty sure we took his laptop too. Not a fan of last minute revision but it was galling to have no internet.

My dd had a clash for A levels last year (French and geography, hardly an unusual combo you might think).

She did the geog exam early, so in the morning, with another student in the same situation, then obviously was kept in isolation, before doing the French exam in the afternoon with the rest of the cohort.

Ah I see yr dd already has a morning exam, that's tricky. How long would the total exam time be?
