13+ Scholarships

Hi, does anyone have a list of schools offering substantial (i.e. 20% and above) non-means tested scholarships in London for boys? There are some of us belonging to the sandwich group - while £100,000 to £140,000 income might sound a lot to someone, if you factor in private fees for 2/3!kids and mortgage, there really isn’t much left for anything else. Overseas holidays and other indulgences might sound extravagant, but these are really necessities if the poor DCs are not left feeling left out in these schools.

OP, in SW London there are hardly any 13plus places left let alone scholarship places. See the current Hampton thread, they let the parents know at the interview stage that there were only 35 places for 100 ds being interviewed this Jan for 13+. Most of the SW 13+ preps are pushing ds towards boarding schools at 13 rather than day schools.

If you have 3 children, in London, I suspect you might qualify for a small bursary if you have a scholarship quality child. I think you are just being goady though. Why don't you phone the bursar of your preferred school.

We are in that bracket and go camping in Wales to afford the fees. You make your choices and cut your cloth to afford the lifestyle. My kids have never minded about not keeping up with the Henriettas and Ptolomys. In fact, I took a load of kids camping last summer half term, they loved it every much as a villa in Tuscany.

Only on Mumsnet.

Hang on, you don't want to disclose you income but want to know if you'll qualify for means testing? How do you think it works? You have to explain your finances if you want the money off. I'm very confused as to what answer you want on here.

Sorry, but that is an utterly ridiculous attitude.

I have a DD who is very keen on a particular private school - we have made it very clear that if she was to get enough of a scholarship & bursary to attend then there will be no expensive trips, no overseas holidays and the luxuries will be keeping up her music and dance classes in the holidays.

She would be far from the only one in that position.

Very few schools offer more than 10% in scholarships - they would (rightly) prefer to put the money into bursaries for children who have no possibility of attending without one, rather than helping to finance exotic holidays so people can keep up with the Joneses.

Most private schools in London offer decent scholarships in music, sport, academic etc. They are not usually means tested as they are given to those that excel. Bursaries are however means tested and you definitely wouldn't be eligible for those. I know DC who received 50% however they received a scholarship in music and sport. Surprised you dont know the answer already given you appear to have DC in private already so not sure if your trying to be goady or not TBH.

Dulwich College - academic scholarships can also be combined with music and sport awards.
