Anyone know where I can find Tormeads results from last year? Not on their website or league tables. Trying to see how they compare to the other local private schools

Hi there,

Tormead doesn’t share the results in the same format as other schools (the headmistress did say why but can’t remember the reason - something about it being a far too narrow way of assessing schools!!!) but you can see the results by subject on their website and kind of work it out!

We’re currently deciding between GHS and Tormead so looking at all these things too!!!

X

Yr10DD · 02/02/2020 21:44

Tormead’s results for the last few years are on their website under main menu, ‘about’, ‘examination results’.

Starlilly88 · 03/02/2020 19:29

Thanks, yes I saw the results by subject but tried to work out an overall percentage without much luck! What are they trying to hide? I reckon they just don't want to be compared to GHS and St Cats, which is fair enough I guess

Having had 3 DC (DSs and DD) going through the Guildford schools and able to compare results with their peers at a range of local schools

  • focus on best fit overall
  • very likely that your DC will achieve v similar results in any of these schools subject to their innate ability and effort (ie they don’t just ‘become’ brighter because they’ve scraped into one of the ‘top’ schools. They might (if they are v bright but a bit unmotivated unless pushed) work harder if they can’t coast. Tormead will have a wider spread of results - their intake reflects a wider ability range.
  • the most academic schools are also the strongest at music and sport so again consider if your DD is über in any of these areas.
Starlilly88 · 03/02/2020 20:05

Thanks surreygoldfish. My DD definitely not academic enough for St Cats or GHS so I was wondering where Tormead was compared to those. Probably academic enough for SWPS - is Tormead similar? Not particularly talented at music, sport or art either so don't need to consider those

OP posts:
surreygoldfish · 03/02/2020 22:17

I’d say very similar to SWPS academically so location, style and feel the difference between the two.

@Starlilly88 if you’re looking for stats that aren’t on their website drop them an email. Or check the ‘news’ archive. If you’re looking for x% of girls achieved grade 9/7’s in 10 GCSEs for example. I find those stats a bit woolly and prefer the per subject. I’ve no idea how other schools present their stats. Tormead don’t submit results to league tables but I’m sure they’d be happy to share with interested parents if they’ve got them in the format you’d like.
Tormead does have a decent range of ability from girls that get 10 GCSEs at grade 9 to girls that get a mix of 7,6 & 5’s. But is still a good achievement for them.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/02/2020 14:21

I've had DD's at both Tormead and GHS if you want to pm me.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/02/2020 14:23

Generally, and of course our experience only, but DD was middle of the road entry for Tormead, having failed to get a place at GHS, but has ended up at the same level as her GHS sister. So, can't really ask for more.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 04/02/2020 14:30

Their A level results are very good, not actually far from GHS and above St Cats. see table below. Only 43 sat but they may offer IB as well. I know nothing about the school just pointing you to the govt league tables.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/02/2020 14:33

cake Tormead sixth form is small, only 43 students in that year, it averages 50 - so often the stats may only be from 1 or 2 person entry subjects, hence it is difficult to compare with GHS who have a much larger sixth form.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 04/02/2020 15:02

Very impressive A level results anyway.

surreygoldfish · 04/02/2020 17:20

The intake at Tormead is much broader - and that includes my DD who would not have thrived at a GHS or similar. Last year’s A level results were known to be a strong cohort so might vary more year to year but I think the school prides itself on the ‘value add’ academically.

Starlilly88 · 04/02/2020 22:01

Good to hear Tormead adds value, that's something which is hard to get a feel for from all the schools.

Hi, A little late to this thread. I went to Tormead 20- years ago so a long time ago but from what I hear, things haven't really changed . I got into GHS and Tormead and chose the latter as I preferred the feel of it - more 'homely' and less school like. It is slightly less academic than GHS but if you are bright you will achieve great results at Tormead. Back then, you would only survive GHS if you were bright. A number of my super intelligent friends who went to GHS regretted it due to the pressure and the lack of wholesomeness. I loved Tormead and for me it was a wonderful choice and I gained a good all round experience together with the results to be able to apply for Vet school. If I still lived in Surrey, my daughter would be applying to go there. No hesitation.

GoldieStar · 28/11/2020 16:19

What did you decide in the end? Currently have the same quandary!

starlilly88 · 12/12/2020 22:00

Still no decision, difficult as we've not been able to visit. Heard good things about the new head from parents but early days

OP posts:
GoldieStar · 13/12/2020 08:48

It's hard when you can't visit isn't it?

GuerrillaShoppa · 13/12/2020 09:45

Just noticed that Tormead has updated the examination results section of the website in case you had not seen....www.tormeadschool.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/External-results-2015-2020.pdf

Robberto · 13/12/2020 21:57

Can vouch for Tormead also, it's always been a good school with a lot of potential, I think a lot of that pent up potential is now starting to be realised..... the new Head has been very impressive so far, his pedigree clearly helps and I know the talk amongst parents is positive.... alongside that the girls and are happy really do think that things, despite covid, are moving forward. Exam results are always strong, wouldn't be surprised if Tormead ends up in the league tables under new management, as they have nothing to hide and I think being in them would actually do them a favour! Center Assessed grading this year obviously skewed things for everyone a bit, but those results are still great, especially when you consider the 'value add' you get from start to finish. Good luck in your hunt, keep us posted on your choices, always nice to hear! Best, Rob

WarrenBird · 14/12/2020 10:47

On Tormead. We've progressed through the Juniors to Senior school and now considering sixth form. We've naturally been looking around for yr12/13, including some co-ed schools. Girls (in girls schools) seem to do this more, as they seek to experience education with 'boys'. We certainly have been along that train of thought in our household this year. However, what was a 50:50 decision on whether to stay at Tormead or not, has become a definite 'stay'. DD and her friends have had a really positive term since Mr Boyd has arrived, there are a number of exciting changes and things on the way, that have really put the (already great) sixth form up-there with anything you could possibly get elsewhere (apart from boys in the classroom!). I think she is pleased that most of her friends will be staying on too, and that she wont have the disruption of changing school/mates. I'm also pleased as she will continue to get good results at Tormead, with staff that know her and her abilities inside out. Its definitely a good option and can reassure the OP that despite its absence from the league tables, the results are strong and school live (away from the academic side) has been full-filling and rewarding for our DD.

starlilly88 · 15/12/2020 18:07

@GuerrillaShoppa thanks for the Tormead link. I know it's not all about results but good to know roughly where they are and what results are like in particular subjects

Good to hear the positive stories of this term, I think Tormead does have potential. Do hear good and bad things but the same for any school

OP posts:
GoldieStar · 15/12/2020 19:03

@starlilly88 interesting you say that as I have heart very few negatives about Tormead at the moment, if any. I think though everyone has different experiences depending on junior and senior school and even if they are in the midst of it ie in Guildford to get things by word of mouth. It seems to have been doing really well and I know a number of parents have been pleased with the communication.

Sometimes it makes it much harder when there is so much choice!!!

Strandguildford · 15/12/2020 21:09

@Starlilly88 agree totally that every school has good and bad points, which usually depends on who you are, your own perspectives, experiences or expectations. As someone who knows (very well) a number of people who think Tormead is a great school for their DD, yet also have their mini-moans now and again, I can understand that you will have heard different things. For context, this forum alone is riddled with good and bad points about St.Cats, GHS, RGS, Lanesborough, Cranmore, St Teresa's, Etc etc......!

I guess what I have heard from friends, and a number of other posters have alluded to, is that the new head master at TM seems to believe in a community where parent (and perhaps more importantly student) viewpoints are encouraged and listened to. I guess realistically every issue can't be solved for everyone, however mums I know say there has been a real evolution at TM, and are pleased with the direction of travel.

Speaking from personal (although not current) and a number of second hand experiences, it's a great school, with the some of the best teachers in the area..... although don't get me wrong, you wont be hard done by for generally great teachers at any of the Guildford independent schools!

Good luck and don't worry too much about the little pros & cons, think more about where you think your DD will fit in, be relaxed, make friends and have an enjoyable education. Academic wise, there isn't much to differentiate the three, apart from GHS pulling ahead of the pack. If you DD is motivated she'll get good results at any of the Guildford schools.
