Do I need to put my full legal name incl. middle names (as on my passport) on my GCSE certificates or is my first and last name okay?

Thanks!!

Mine has the a v instead of a w in one of my name's and no middle name and it hasn't caused any problems in any of the 5 jobs I've had. I would say you're definitely ok. Also you'll find you only really need them for your first job/ very rarely.

TeenPlusTwenties · 23/01/2020 16:54

I think it should be the full name.
I expect a teacher will be along shortly, though suggest you check with your exams officer / school / college / whatever.

marcopront · 23/01/2020 17:00

Ok my experience is with IB not IGCSE.
The advice I give students is the name on their birth certificate, passport and results certificate should match exactly. This is however based on what is needed for US visa applications

But I would say if you have your full name as it is on your passport it won't be a problem.Not having your full name might cause a problem.

confusedstudent020 · 24/01/2020 23:43

@TeenPlusTwenties

My exams officer says that it doesn't matter - although he mentions that I may have to make a statement/oath or something saying that I am the actual owner of the certificates.

However, I don't know whether to trust him as he has only just become the exams officer this year... and my school is quite wack.

I would probably put the name I was planning to use as an adult. I hadn't used my first name for years when I got mine. Now after my deed poll change they don't match, but then again not even too sure where they are. Fortunately I don't plan to change jobs again. I would say though unless you are planning to change name, passport etc. too then go with full name.

coconuttelegraph · 25/01/2020 06:59

The exams officer wont know what you're going to use the GCSE certificate for in the future will he, he's probably giving you the correct generic answer but I assume that as this is a question you need to ask that you have some out of the ordinary circumstances.

The name on it will be the one he puts on the exam entry, is the name you currently use going to change?

user1471525753 · 25/01/2020 07:04

I'm an exams officer, your exam certificates should be in your legal name (e.g. If your name on your birth certificate is "Charles" but you are known as "Charlie" - the name on the certificate should be Charles) but it doesn't have to be your full name. Usually it's first name, middle initial, last name. If they are incorrect the school should send them back to the exam boards to be reprinted.

This is from the JCQ General Regulations for Approved Centres:

...treat all candidates equally, including private candidates, throughout the examination process. This would also extend to post-results services and appeals.
Advice:
Whilst it is advisable to enter candidates under names that can be verified against suitable identification such as a birth certificate, driver’s licence or passport, the decision is the candidate’s / centre’s to make.
The centre is best placed to understand the candidate’s particular circumstances and make an informed decision.

Are you planning to change your name?
If not what is the problem in putting your full legal name?

confusedstudent020 · 25/01/2020 17:27

@marcopront

I am not planning to change my name... it is just that I am not particularly fond of my middle names. Also, I did a gcse last year and the school only used my first and last name to register me, so I wasn't even sure if continuity of the names on the certificate were important.
Thanks!

@TW2013

Were you asked for your GCSE certificates when you applied to your job? For me, my certificate ideally would have my first name, which I use on the regular as well as my last name. However my full legal name includes my middle name, so I wasn't sure if I needed to include them.

Also, I don't plan on changing my name.

Thanks!

@coconuttelegraph

No I don't plan to change my name at any point.

Let's say my name is Jack Harry Robinson... I go around with Jack Robinson and I don't like my middle name (Harry).
Last year I did a GCSE and it only had my first and last name but my passport and birth certificate have all three (also my school records only have my first and last name).

Thanks!

yes, full name as on birth certificate/passport.
otherwise could cause issues for certain jobs (anything that needs a security check).

confusedstudent020 · 25/01/2020 17:40

@user1471525753
Thank you. For me, I'd be using my full first name but not my middle name. So if my name is Jack Harry Robinson, I'd only say Jack Robinson on my certificate? Do you think that would cause any issues? Especially, as I don't think I have a very common name.

The name on my other certificate (the one I did in year 10) isn't incorrect per se... it is just my first and last name without my middle name. Also, I'd have to pay like £40 for the name to be changed.

confusedstudent020 · 25/01/2020 17:42

@stripeypillowcase

I'm thinking of going into ideally medicine, but if not that probably consulting (like management). I know they are very different but they are the only two careers I can vaguely picture myself in...

Anyways, do you think those kind of careers would require a background check?

Thank you!

I have a DBS check with my legal name and also known by name.
My signatures and names do not match and this has never been a problem on any official document.
I obviously have no ID evidence for my known by name and have cleared DBS and Home Office checks without any issues.
I don't see it as an issue to miss out the middle initial.

confusedstudent020 · 25/01/2020 17:45

@MarchingFrogs
Thank you so much! I've read the document, and I think I'll probably just stick with my first and last name... I like it more that way anyways.

confusedstudent020 · 25/01/2020 17:48

@cabbageking
Thank you for the reply!
I think I have decided to go with just my first and last name... hopefully I'll still be able to change it back (this morning I kind of freaked and just added my middle name because I was kind of worried it would cause issues when I applied to uni) Blush

Marco - Not all birth certificate names are used though. How does that logic apply for people who are adopted? My passport and birth certificate have never matched. I have never used the name on my birth certificate to apply for and legal documents. How does that apply if the person is married and taking GCSE's later in life?

I had a name on all my GCSE certificates that doesn't match my birth certificate. It wasn't my legal surname at the time but the name I was known as since I was 2 years old (step father). I was also able to apply for passports/driving licence in the name I was known by not my 'legal' surname. My name was changed when I was 18 by deed poll. I've never had any issues.

Back to the point - I would put full first and last name on GCSE certificates. I had my middle name included but I don't think it really matters.

confusedstudent020 · 25/01/2020 18:20

@BilieEyelash
Thanks! Yes, I've pretty much decided to just put my first and last name. Hopefully, it won't cause issues later.

@BillieEyelash
I am just saying what I have been told. This is advice for 18 year olds applying for student visas (but not from the UK). It is not my logic so, sorry I can't justify it.

user1471525753 · 26/01/2020 07:38

First & last name will be fine. You also have numbers unique to you that are used when you are entered for any exams (the centre will sort these, you don't need to do anything) - these numbers can be used by universities etc. to confirm the grades belong to you.

watermelonsugarmum · 23/10/2024 12:20

@BilieEyelash in a similar situation right now if any one has any advice . My birth certificate name never matched the name on my passport . So I then decided to change it via deed poll from my old passport name to my new one . So I have a birth certificate in one name , my old passport that never matched the name on my birth certificate & my new passport name change via deed poll so nothing matches across my documents . ( the name is similar across its not like a huge change across the 3 documents ) so I now have an employer asking me for GCSE certificates & they are printed in the name of my birth certificate but don’t match my current name on my passport or my old passport does any one have any advice for me ?
