Child wants to know more

Hello,

My DC in year 6 at a state school.

He finished Galore Park books ( ISEB 11+) and found them more interested than KS2 or CGP/ Bond 11+ . I looked at the Collins materials for year 7 at a book shop but they are to easy and mainly similar to 11+ materials.

As an alternative, I have seen CGP KS3 Higher Level books but could not to find Galore Park 13+ or CGP 13+ on shelves to compare them.

DC already passed 11+ exams but insist to continue. Currently, he does Bond materials for 11-12 years old just to practice.
I do not keep a pressure on him at all. He is not a genius, just a child who would like to know more.

What materials would you recommend to help?
I am not sure but maybe he will try 13+ if we relocate.

ThanksSmile

Hi OP. When you say your child wants to “know more,” do you mean in general? Or simply that he wants to do NVR / VR practice?

Where might you relocate to?

Thank you for the message. I meant Maths, English and Science.

Rather than pushing ahead in the syllabus I suggest:

  • UK maths challenge
  • coding
  • astronomy
  • geology
  • a million non-syllabus books
Pushing ahead will lead to boredom later. Extending sideways is the way to go.

Op, for English any teacher would just recommend to read as widely as possible. Fiction, non-fiction - whatever. This is by far the best way to widen vocabulary and assist with creative writing and comprehension.

Agree with the pp that those curriculum-based books are very narrow. Rather than pushing through “levels”, it’s better to go deeper and wider into areas of particular interest.

I’m sure there are maths websites similar to “Mathletics” but more aimed at secondary school, that support the curriculum.

As for science, you could try some non text / study aid books if he’s interested? There will be loads in any bookshop.

how about some logic problem or brain teaser type books?

Maybe something like this: Bletchley Park brainteasers

Thank you mummies. Your recommendations are very useful.

DS is a great reader and works as a librarian at his school. He likes do researches and find interesting facts. He is in fond of Glenn Murphy books and encyclopedias, classic and modern authors.

The reason why I am trying to compare CGP KS3 higher level and 13+ is DS desire to sit entrance exam into St Albans school where his was unsuccessful this year ( had a tonsillitis with high temperature and failed an interview, scaring to say that feel pain).
