Pupil with a laptop?

I am a PGCE student and I just started my alternate placement. In one of the classes I will take over the student has SEN and uses a laptop in lessons. This is new to me I was just wondering how is best to support her? Should I email her notes and things or just allow her to type these herself? Just any advice on differentiation would be welcome please as my last school didn't have a lot of SEND. Thankyou.

It depends on your subject. My son used a laptop for sixth form and downloaded notes then added to them himself. He used his for dyspraxia - for him that meant not being able to copy notes from the board and writing production was v slow. Your student should have a file that details their needs - their current teacher should have this. If in doubt ask the senco. Good luck with your placement and remember to add your differentiation to your lesson plan!

as scrunch said. There should be some kind of plan detailing needs. My DD2 has a 'pupil passport'.

DD1 used a laptop. If others were copying from the board, she just typed. But if it was a worksheet, she was meant to be sent it in advance so she could then fill in the blanks. Then at college she was given a print out of presentations that she could just annotate.

Have you asked the SENCO about the student's support?

You should know the medical and SEND needs for everyone in the class. This would be normal procedure.

cabbage king, did you mean to sound so abrupt? How can a PGCE student know about all the medical and SEND needs for a class she hasn't started teaching yet?

I am sorry you felt it was abrupt. That was not my intention.
