Standardised scores needed for GHS and Tormead

Hi there,

Just starting 11 plus nightmare 🙄.

Does anyone know the typical standardised scores for girls getting in to GHS, St. Cats and Tormead?

There seems to be this information on this in threads for London schools (e.g. 135 for SPGS, 125 for WHS) but not Surrey schools.

Thanks!!

My girls went to GHS and we also applied to Tormead (but not St Cat's).

I don't really understand 'standardised scores'. Offer letters say nothing about scores. They just say that your daughter has done well in the entrance exams, offer her a place, and ask you to confirm acceptance by x date.

Things might have changed since we applied though. My younger one is now at university so entrance exams were a while ago.

For what it's worth, both girls were very happy at GHS.

Hi Pink, I don’t know if any schools ask for a fixed, average standardised score? Schools do track these scores through primary (they tend not to share with parents though)! There’s various scores and, having had DC at a prep, I know that they want a few of them in the 130-135 range if they are going to recommend and write your child a reference for the “top” schools. I know GHS gets GCSE results very similar to SPGS or G&L etc, so I can only imagine it’s the same. But high CAT scores don’t always translate into high performance in exams unfortunately! Plus the child still needs to interview well, etc. Not so sure about Tormead etc. If your in a prep school they will have this info and they will show you if asked directly (or they should). It’s their baseline for guiding pupils towards appropriate senior schools.

Thanks so much for your reply 😊.

Our head doesn’t know the Surrey schools so well, so less able to help ( we’re moving to Guildford from London).

We know how DD has scored throughout prep so wanted to check how likely to get into Tormead or St Cats ( I am suffering from 11 plus madness currently 🤣🤣) ... GHS a stretch based on her scores.

Managed to log in and read my inbox on my phone and that's it
Just to say I have a pretty good idea of standard needed
I am a tutor but am full now and in January after the exams
I currently have 6 pupils taking entrance exams this month including 2 girls who took GHS yesterday.
I am in Godalming and have been tutoring for years!
Please contact me if you would like any advice

Hi OP,
Are you happy to say which London schools your head thought were doable or a stretch and some of us can probably give a bit of a steer. I know quite a few people whose girls have sat for London schools (typically the SW London schools or the JAGS area ones) and also Guildford ones.

PinkBT · 05/01/2020 11:22

Hi GU24Mum,

That’s kind!!

Was interested if St Cats and Tormead were more WHS/PHS level or Surbiton High level ( a tiny bit lower!).

It’s all irrelevant really as exams this week anyway!!!!!

Hi OP. I have had to DD's go though, one at GHS and one at Tormead. I haven't ever heard of "scores" but maybe this is a new thing?

From the many girls I know who have done all the entrance tests, at all the Surrey schools, I can only really comment that they generally end up where they are best suited.

The one DD who was academically very forward at 11 and went to GHS, and the other DD who didn't get in to GHS, and went to Tormead, have both ended up academically very similar, and were both very happy where they were. They are both great schools.

Oh - and Good luck to your daughter PinkBT

@Baaaahhhhh. Thanks so much!!

OP, you could probably make a very rough comparison based on the GCSE results? Look on the school websites. So if Tormead achieve about 80% 9-7 grades at GCSE, this would put it just slightly ahead of a good year at Ibstock, or in line with PHS in one of their not-so “record breaking” years (eg this year)? So you might expect these schools are looking for a similar cohort?

Also check the numbers of applicants per place at these schools as this will obviously be relevant.

Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to reply!

This thread is very helpful, thanks. I was hoping someone may have fresh information on the standardised scores needed for these, and also Farnborough Hill.

I'm curious how set in stone the schools are on the girls hitting the score expectations or it there is any leniency.

Thanks in advance.
