Kingham Hill School

Avoid Kingham Hill School. In my humble opinion Kingham Hill is a farce of a school. Or at least the appearance they put forward for our consideration as doting parents is rather farcical.
Initially I thought my decision to send my child there was a wisely informed and a good choice. Indeed they seemed to be very caring and on the face of it they had pretty decent facilities. But as terms passed and stories were regaled I discovered that quite a lot is rather fake. Open days for instance; parents receive an email saying it is compulsory for all children to attend school for the three Saturday open days that the school has each year as part of its intake marketing. As the school doesn’t operate a 6 day week, unlike many independent schools, kids populate various areas of the school trying to act like Saturday school is quite usual and no big thing. In essence however the children have no idea what they’re doing there or where to go - ‘do we fill the lecture hall of the library sir?’
I gather that Potential buyers, for that read Parents are escorted around by members of the lower 6th. It turns out that the upper 6th, because they will be leaving imminently, proved to be rather too honest in telling potential fee payers exactly what they thought of the school. I gather the disparaging remarks went down rather badly when the teachers found out, unsurprisingly!
On open days the head teachers dress the school up to look rather amazing, much to the consternation and surprise of the students who have been ferried in to look joyful, educated and over the moon that their giving up their weekend to put on a pageant show. ‘Dad, today they put a mannequin in the theology classroom dressed in traditional Jewish clothing!’ They also installed a petting zoo outside one of the day boarding houses, with a real life donkey ‘This is where the children can pet the animals’ they said. The fact that it has never been there before and probably won’t be on Monday is neither here nor there.
No doubt great store was placed on the amazing swimming pool and gymnasium on the parents tour - I understand that The kids don’t generally use the swimming pool as the school operate it as a private club for the local residents. In fairness I think there is a swim club if you don’t mind getting your little darling to the school at the unearthly hour of six something in the morning.
And don’t let the CCF assault course fool you. It is seldom used, other than for decoration. Similarly the climbing wall that has had the blocks removed to stop it being used.
The school does have a bar though, where I gather the headmaster holds court as the landlord. I think it’s to encourage the parents who have driven there to unwind over a Harveys Bristol Cream, have a bit of a gossip whilst the landlord listens in before swaying towards their 4x4 to take their little darling home. It’s really rather preposterous in truth. Whilst I’m all for a chin wag I think a cafe might be more appropriate and if the head wants an insight maybe a touch of honesty might be better.

School sports are woeful and the discipline crazily Victorian and harsh.
Sports day is mid week and parents aren’t really encouraged to attend. The classrooms that you don’t see on open day are archaic. The IT facilities awful - children are not encouraged in IT as there are no facilities or teaching staff for that. I believe they have a handful of chrome tablets but DD hasn’t used one of them in years. The head teacher is pretty invisible.

The A level exam results look good because not many kids get to do them - I think a bit of off rolling occurs. The list goes on. In my opinion the teaching staff are not great and a huge amount of them are very young and at worst ‘gap students’. It’s shocking now I know the truth. My DD is leaving this year thankfully.

Just shows that opinions of a school are just that, a personal opinion. I recognize none of the above in KHS, and have 2 children there.

Dipsydog · 17/12/2019 11:09

I’m afraid I’m not alone as I know other parents who have said it was a big mistake. Don’t get me wrong my DD enjoyed some of her time but as a school preparIng children for life it’s not great.

I have friends there who are very happy with the school

Nodressrehearsal · 01/01/2020 02:09

Show me any school that doesn’t create an all singing all dancing atmosphere on Open Days. It’s not highly selective & yet GCSE results are really good. If you’re that disappointed with it why didn’t you make alternative provision?

This will be the 3rd year My Grandson has been a weekly boarder at Kingham Hill School.
He is extremely happy boarding he has made some lovely friends, and doing very well in all classes.
All the teaching Staff are very caring they genuinely care about all the students.
Being a parent I found The headmaster Mr Seaward is very approachable as is all the senior staff.
I feel very privileged that my grandson attends Kingham and am very grateful for all the hard work and care that all the staff show to the students. I highly recommend this School.

Gosh, I don’t know this school at all but the whole tone of this piece is really questionable! I’d agree, if it really is so awful why haven’t you moved your child a long time ago? And I also wonder what you are looking to achieve by your post OP because I’m not sure reading through it that the result is going to be what you are looking for.

I am thinking to send my son (targeting G10) to KH. Can anyone here share more update information about the school? in terms of the teaching approach, learning atmosphere, teachers' experiences, students ...etc. I heard there are about 1/3 of students require special needs education, is the school doing its best to immerse this student community into the rest of the student body in the classroom. I cannot find the percentage of students exam results in A-level. About how many Sixth Formers taking the exam and what is the percentage of the grades?

crocks67 · 11/02/2021 14:31

@poodlelovermama - our son started at KH last September, he loves it and is so much happier than he was at his previous school. The biggest difference has been that the kids at KH all seem to help and support each other, rather than compete against each other to be the best in everything. The teaching has been excellent, and all the staff are kind and caring. I'd be very surprised if 1/3 of students require special needs - I've seen no evidence of that. It's a small, nurturing school, with lots of military kids and plenty of full boarders. Feel free to message me with any questions.

poodlelovermama · 20/02/2021 05:26

Thank you for your sharing Crocks67. Which grade is your son? And would you mind sharing the way of teaching ? Is it based on textbook or beyond curriculum? Classroom atmosphere? Encourage interactive discussion or focus on textbook teaching? How the teachers in general, are they of similar experiences. I read the ISI report seems there are great differences in teaching for more and less abled students. The learning pace is slow with lots of coursework not completed. I just quoted this directly from the official report... and no intention to be critical and offensive 🙏🏻

@poodlelovermama - I'll pm you.

Lots of DC go there who cannot get into better schools. It’s not an academic powerhouse but parents don’t want that from the school.

WhyAmIPayingFees · 25/02/2021 07:36

We live very near KH and have used the school for activity camps and know some parents with kids there. Wouldn’t send my own kids there. Too much religion and not nearly enough academic focus. A level cohort is very small which makes me wonder about what the results mean. If you are looking for day school the nearby state Cotswold School would seem to be a rather more sensible choice.

I have a son in L6 doing four pretty academic A levels and a daughter in Y10 doing GCSEs. Both have experience of a few other schools as we've moved around a fair but, and are loving and thriving at KHS. Son achieved excellent results at GCSE and am anticipating similar for both next year. Teaching is good, with staff approachable and willing to work with them all to achieve their full potential. We deliberately chose KHS for the fact that it wasn't an academic hothouse with the associated pressures that they bring, and so far that has proved to be the right choice for us. Happy to answer any questions you have directly.
