There are many but Wiltshire is large, which part?
Chippenham has good schools, if you want choice.

Swww · 04/12/2019 07:51

Moving towards Devizes or Malborough.
Looking for options really.

My other Ds is special starting resendential as a part of provision. So can really be too far away.

St Johns is very highly regarded. It's fabulous if your child fits the mold and is pretty academic. Their provision for SEN is less stellar.

A great deal of people move to Marlborough specifically for the school

Handsnotwands · 04/12/2019 10:27

Oh do you need to be near Trowbridge? it's quite a long way from Marlborough, a good hourish

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/12/2019 10:30

Marlborough is a lovely town, my DH was born and brought up there.

If you need to be near Trowbridge I'd look at schools in and around Devizes. Remember Wiltshire roads can be quite windy and slow.

You can DofE compare schools here. I set the link to a school in Devizes and only Good/Outstanding, but you can play around from there.

And coming from a fully comp area, Grammar's aren't te be all and end all in life. Find an area that suits and provided you have a decent local school then go for it.

St Johns Marlborough is rated outstanding by ofsted. I think you have to be living in catchment to get in. My children didn’t go there but quite a few families from my town send their children there. There’s lots of information on their website, but you need to have a 6 in a subject to study it at A level. I had some friends with less academic children who weren’t allowed to stay I. The sixth form a few years back.

Thank you so much all. I am relieved.
The schools locally are not even in the table of gov.uk.
The only school is St Augustine's ( i dont think i stand to even get into that )and rest that are all out of catchment ( st Laurence). I am looking at this for my younger one who is 8 at the mo. He is bright butmight sway not so good company. He has already started practising for 11+ and will try to give an exam.( there are other children who actually way above his level but do not want to pressurise ). I dont think I can even pay for it.
Just want to give him a good chance.
I also thought there will be more tutors for GCSE ect if i need towards swindon.

My other Ds who is older special needs goes to westbury side college and will be in residential for most days. So it's just a pick up and a drop. I need to stay in a wiltshire in a quieter area just so he can cope when he comes home.

Does this seem.like a good picture.?

the 2 schools that I hear about are Marlborough and Royal Wotton Bassett.
I woudl say if you can be in Marlboroough, then you have a great option

Wintersnowdrop · 04/12/2019 13:38

You need to be in catchment to get into year 7. I was saying in order to stay in the sixth form and study for A levels, you need to have 6’s and above in your GCSEs. Some children from my town managed to get into the school in lower years but didn’t get the grades to stay there for sixth form. And some other people I know with less academic children had to move to Swindon college at 16. St Barts in Newbury is a good school, oversubscribed as well, and in Berkshire not Wiltshire.

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/12/2019 13:41

(Slightly off topic, but if you can't get a 6 in a subject at GCSE you quite probably shouldn't do it for A level anyway.)

CarterJ32 · 04/12/2019 14:02

I've heard good things about St John's! They have a good reputation and Outstanding Ofsted rating

Swww · 04/12/2019 15:13

Thank you. I can move from wiltshire at the moment. I am planning to move to malborough next year. My boy will be in yr 5 then. So should get a place in st johns malborough.

OP posts:

Correction. I cannot move from wiltshire at the moment.

If you move to Marlborough then St Johns is a good school - my children went/go there - I would not say it is outstanding by any means but in the scheme of things it is a good secondary school. You will NOT get in if you are outside catchment area unless you are linked through a primary school via the academy chain. There are a number primary schools in this position - Burbage being one - check the website for details. If you move to Marlborough then no issue with primaries you are in catchment and will get a place.

woodlands01 · 04/12/2019 19:48

Regarding 6th form - entry requirements have been significantly lowered this year. There are more vocational courses available too for the less academic.

Thank you so much all.
