Looking for a school for 2020 Year 9 entry for DD. Visited St Gabriels and Queen Anne's - neither really excited us! Any suggestions? Doesn't need to be boarding, just happy welcoming, sporty and not too snobby!!

LVS is wait-listing so not really an option
Downe House - DD likes the look of it but not sure we fit the mould!

Thanks!

have a look at claire's court or wandsworth (although not sure if this is too far away)

Wishforsnow · 15/11/2019 17:06

St George's, Ascot or Heathfield they are near LVS

Have you looked at The Abbey and would you consider St Helens in Abingdon many girls travel from north Hampshire on the buses.
Sporty and day schools tend not to a combination in the area you are looking.

What sports are you particularly interested in? The schools you have been too have girls competing nationally and internationally at a variety of sports, but pretty much all training happens outside school.

My kids go to Lord Wandsworth and it fits the bill of friendly, sporty and not snobby.

Thanks TheletterZ, sadly Wandsworth are wait listed as it looked fab!
If I could find another version of Wandsworth that has space that would be ideal!

Why the worry that you won't fit into Downe House? It is a very good school and parents speak highly of the pastoral care it offers. My dd goes to its main feeder and the girls who go there come from a pretty wide range of backgrounds. Pretty large numbers are the dd of teachers, and very many have at least one parent from s non-English background, so it is certainly not all posh, wealthy and English, if this is what you think the mould is. Very friendly and committed head, too.

Unfortunately, DH has a boring as hell location/buildings so as a teenager I would have rather shot myself than going there - but from a parent's view that might be a plus.

Pangbourne? Sporty, not particularly academic. Various friend's kids have gone there and loved it. Sadly too far from us, so would have had to be boarding and our child didn't want to board.

The Oratory is going co-ed next year, and I think they're quite sporty. I used to hear good things about both Leighton Park as and St Joseph's, but I don't know what they're like now. Bradford College has a nice site, but I was told by someone (again a few years ago) that so many of the pupils came from wealthy foreign families accustomed to having servants that they treated the staff with disdain with a "we're paying your wages" attitude Shock

Kenya2312 · 18/11/2019 13:27

Ha Ha, we live a mile or so from DH and yes it is rather remote!!

Bradfield is likely to be a wait list at this stage, but never any harm asking. Have to admit we didn't like it much, felt it was a bit snobby, but everyone is different.

Leighton Park possibly not so likely to be a wait list. Several of our child's friends went there also and seem happy. We concluded it would not be a good fit for us.

Others which no one has mentioned are round the Wokingham area - Reddam House, Luckley House and Holme Grange.

Have a look at Farnborough Hill- lovely school with good transport links
