A friend's son was encouraged to leave school at end of year 10 and instead enroll at a local college to do just maths/english GCSEs and a construction course. He agreed to it happily enough, but now it's not working out, and he wants to go back to school. Are the school obliged to accept him? If they have a spare place I'm guessing the answer is yes, but they're generally an oversubscribed school so his place may have been filled.

If there is now no space no they aren't obliged to accommodate him and an appeal will take a while. Is he in a position to take gcses next summer? Could he do so at the college?

He hasn't settled at the college and attendance has been an issue. Unlike school, nobody phones your mum if you don't turn up.

I'm surprised the college are not reporting non attendance, he would not pass the course unless he hit 80% minimum and they will lose funding. Have they had a meeting?

Mum was told after a few weeks. They had a meeting. An action plan was put in place but the college isn't doing what it said it would do in the plan and the boy has become very disillusioned about the whole thing.
