Hi all

I paid a deposit in year 7 for my dds private school and my dd has now left the school in year 11. Should I get my deposit back?

We got our deposit back for Primary, when she left yr6, back in July.

You should have been given a contract back in yr7 - check that. Or call the the school? We were asked how we wanted this paying to us before we left the school.

Find your contract and check the terms in that to see how your DDs school returns deposits.

The contract for my DC’s private school said that they would credit the deposit against the final term’s fees.
So a parent at this school would see the deposit returned in the form of slightly cheaper fees for the final term, rather than as a separate payment to them.

Quite often the deposits go straight into the bursary fund unless specifically requested to refund!

Comefromaway · 01/10/2019 09:28

Yes, we got deposits back.

Trewser · 01/10/2019 09:29

Sometimes they use the deposit against the fees and to cover GCSES

Hoppinggreen · 01/10/2019 10:09

At DD’s school it get knocked off the final terms fees

BeautifulBlackBamboo · 01/10/2019 10:16

It is usually deducted from the last term fee, so might save you some work if you could check your last invoice.

ROZ12 · 01/10/2019 10:21

I paid for the GCSEs separately and it’s not been deducted from last terms fees.

Usually deducted from the last terms fees, however, its generally assumed that your child will stay until year 13, and the deposit is non-refundable if you leave before that date. Obviously that only applies if your school has a sixth form!

Where on earth does this? Having had dealings with at least half a dozen private schools, I know not a single one that does this.

The most common gripe is that parents who withdraw their child after GCSE don't realise that they are withdrawing early, and therefore forfeit their deposit. It's actually quite explicit in the T&C of my children's current school that withrawal before the end of Yr 13 will result in the loss of the deposit. Not sure what would happen if the school rejected the child on the basis of GCSE results, presumably in that situation they would refund.

LIZS · 01/10/2019 18:51

We were asked to opt in to donate it to bursary funds. Exam remark fees , books were deducted from deposit.

Parsimon · 01/10/2019 19:46

We were asked to opt out of donating it to the school. I balked at the sheer gumption and asked for all of it back.

ROZ12 · 01/10/2019 20:01

We did not meet grade criteria form.

For sixth form!

OP posts:
mrsm43s · 01/10/2019 21:00

I would say you need to contact the school and check the contract. I think its worth challenging if they could not offer your DC a place in sixth form.

NCTDN · 01/10/2019 22:03

Omg you have to pay for gcses?!

ROZ12 · 01/10/2019 22:46

Ok will ask them .

Yes we have to pay for GCSEs!

OP posts:
NCTDN · 02/10/2019 22:09

Do all private schools pay for gcses?

Trewser · 02/10/2019 22:15

I think so.

Comefromaway · 02/10/2019 22:18

We didn’t for dd.

TeddTess · 03/10/2019 10:21

my ds's for one!

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 04/10/2019 16:14

You should get a final bill with all the extra's and including your deposit, usually leaving a smaller amount to return to you. Perhaps they haven't yet issued the final invoices??

Yes, generally you have to pay for GCSE entry fees in private school. I assume the schools that don't charge for them individually will have covered them in higher general fees.

kingfisher90 · 05/10/2019 23:22

At my children’s school we get the deposit back at the end of year 13, the following term, after all extras have been deducted.

Our parent contract at joining has a box which you tick in or out of donating your deposit. You should have a copy of your contract, 2 were sent to us when we were offered places.

ROZ12 · 06/10/2019 00:19

I’ve got it back ! Thanks all.
