Hi

Any experiences how girls feel entering as a newbie there? Not an academic dd.

WHS is a state school.

It is a grammar school with some seriously bright girls. If your DD is not academic, I'm not sure it would be the best place for her. Have you visited?

ROZ12 · 28/08/2019 16:59

Yes we did in year7! We are deciding sixth to commence next week! We have a good state already in place, giving in our notice at the private. We just like some of the A levels on offer. The school is known for academically bright girls but I was just looking at the results last year and see for GCSEs there are a number of 3-5s- so surely there is a mix of children?

Has she achieved the grades needed to enter the 6th form & been offered a place? If she's not academic it's unlikely.

Seeline · 28/08/2019 17:25

So is she starting Y12 now?

Leeds2 · 28/08/2019 17:26

Have you actually given notice at the private school your DD is attending? If you haven't done it yet, you may be liable for a term's fees.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 28/08/2019 17:32

I'm amazed that there are 3-5s. But ok.

What did your DD get? She wouldn't want to be at the bottom of the cohort would she? That would potentially be miserable

Pangur2 · 28/08/2019 17:42

If your daughter isn't academic, I wouldn't send her to a grammar school tbh. A good state would probably be a better fit. (Which state is it?)

I'd imagine the students with 3s in certain subjects are not allowed to do those subjects in yr 12.

Pangur2 · 28/08/2019 17:44

Actually, to be fair, if she reached 7/8/9s for the subjects she wants to do, she could be ok. What subjects does she want to do and what did she get?

ROZ12 · 28/08/2019 18:10

She got a mixture of grades but met the 6 grade point average they require .

Yes notice has been given.

It’s a state which is in top 5 percent of country Coloma girls school.

Ooh Coloma is very good too.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 18:22

Personally if she's not super academic I wouldn't be moving her to a grammar school for sixth form. Why not leave her where she is?

Changemyname18 · 28/08/2019 18:24

The students achieving the grade 3-5s are unlikely to be staying on for 6th form. At this late stage, unless your DD has grades 7 or above in the subjects she wants to study she may not get in . Popular choices already be full. Not sure a grammar school sixth form is the right choice for a DD who is not academic

ROZ12 · 28/08/2019 18:31

She wants to do psychology and business which she hasn’t done before and eng which she did get 7-8s in .

I was just going to add that usually the 'external' candidates applying for grammar school sixth form places tend to be very high achieving candidates (rather than some of the more middling pupils already at the school who will seamlessly pass from Yr 11 to Yr 12).

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 28/08/2019 18:36

Both psychology and business used to have a lot of maths in (that was a long time ago!). Is that still the case and is her maths grade good?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 18:46

I was just looking at the results last year and see for GCSEs there are a number of 3-5s- so surely there is a mix of children?

Those DC are the exception. You'll find that most of the SW London grammars have the odd one or two GCSE results 'blips' which will be down to a very few children who under-perform for whatever reason.

ROZ12 · 28/08/2019 18:54

Not good At maths but ok.

Sorry choices are eng lit and Lang combined , sociology , psychology and media

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 18:55

OP, has your DD been offered a place, otherwise this exercise is purely academic?

dingit · 28/08/2019 19:06

That was my dd 4 years ago. It was a bit of a last minute decision to apply. Her school had no 6th form and she had an awful year 11 with bullying. The main bully was going to the 6th form college so we took a leap of faith.
It was absolutely the right decision. There were about 16 outsiders, and half that group stuck together throughout and she still meets up with her 'wallysquad' after 2 years of them spread far and wide at uni, now all getting together for 21st birthday celebrations.
I don't thiink the 6th form performs as well as the 11+, and at times the pastoral care was a bit shakey
Dd went in with 7 A* and 6 A, her a level outcome should have been AAA but dropped to BBB after her grandad passed away mid exams. ( she still got in to first choice uni)
If there's anything you need to know, PM me.

ROZ12 · 28/08/2019 19:20

Applying tomorrow!

I did Pyschology A level, don’t recall any maths (it’s not my strong point).

I’m near those grammars and DS didn’t pass for yr 7, I’m thankful as the people I know who go find it so competitive and demoralising if you’re not in the top perfecent. I’m thankful DS didn’t get in as wouldn’t have suited him, he’s in year 11 now in a local school and will be attending their 6th form. It’s an outstanding school and one of only 60 ‘super schools’ uk wide (whatever that means! Lol). Plus he’s predicted 8/9’s. At the time when he didn’t get in I did think we would consider applying again at 6th form (it was Wilson’s and Wallington boys he did tests for) but there’s no way now we would move from his school, so happy with it, and DD starts next week there.

Colomo is an excellent school. I’d stick with that.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 28/08/2019 22:13

Really Darbs? Mine was so maths heavy. I remember as I wanted to get away from maths! Maybe it depends on time or exam board?

Darbs76 · 28/08/2019 22:21

Yes I don’t recall any maths at all. It was over 25yrs ago but given I was rubbish at maths I’m sure i’d have remembered and I did ok in it! Yes maybe it depended on exam board etc. I’d never have connected maths with psychology though

Darbs76 · 28/08/2019 22:24

Just read this which suggests 10% maths (research studies etc)
www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/psychology/as-and-a-level/psychology-7181-7182/mathematical-requirements-and-exemplification

ROZ12 · 28/08/2019 22:50

Thank you , yes Coloma is one of the top nationally.
