Disappointed with GCSE results

I feel terrible for saying this but I'm disappointed with my son's results today. He has enough to go to college and do his course but I'm scared it will affect his choices in the future. He got a 6 in his favourite subject which I know is good but I'm worried that universities will look at this unfavourably (this would be his chosen uni course). Back in the day they used to take AS levels into consideration but obviously these have gone now so will they look at his GCSE's? He was predicted 7/8/9 and got 5/6/7. Everywhere I look it seems the rest of the world got all 9's and I feel sad for him. Am I being a ninny??

I didn’t go thru school system here but most friends just seem to talk about A level results and all offers are conditional on them - no one mentions GCSEs. As long as he has high enough marks to do his chosen A levels he should be fine.

They only show the 9s on the tele. We got 3s in our house, expected 6s. Resits it is.

Disappointed yes, but I've got a gutted teenager, and yes I've done the it's not the end of the world, there is always next year speech. Sometimes things don't just go well first time round.

If your DC has the grades for where they want to go, and have passes in English, Maths, universities won't look at them, unless you are looking at Oxbridge.

Only on Mumsnet it is all wall to wall 9's.

We were very impressed with my dd getting 5s, 6s & 7s last year.

A year on and she is doing well with her A-levels.

DS has just done the rounds of university open days this summer. The amount of emphasis they put on GCSE results varies between universities and within universities it varies between departments. For example, a friend visited one department which quoted 20:80 weighting on GCSE grades vs predicted A-level grades. But the point is that they each have their own formula.

If he does his research in advance, he will be equipped with all this information when applying.

Mine got 2’s, 3’s and 4’s. I’m trying not to be disappointed as she is devastated

He got passes. That is a good thing

Yup, some courses/uni's aren't remotely bothered about GCSE results. Some just want a 4 or 5 in Maths and English. Do your homework, look at the websites, phone the Admissions Teams if you need any clarification. Sounds like he'll be just fine unless he had his heart set on Oxbridge?

It all depends on what he wants to do in the future OP.

When I did mine I got 1A, some Bs and some Cs. I had lots of friends who had done better but my results were still seen as good. I think it is awful that a 6 which is an old b isnt it? Is seen as low. As long as the results are good enough for sixth form then move on from them. I seriously doubt university will look other than to check they have maths and English. That is all we used to do when I did uni admissions
