Looking to buy a waterproof for DD starting secondary school to have in her bag/wear over her blazer. she will be walking a long way, it rains a lot, she wants to be prepared.

She is very tall so it will have to be an adult one. Don't want to spend loads but want waterproof rather than shower proof.

Mountain Warehouse didn't really have anything when we went in and those it did have were £30 which seems a lot.

thanks

www.regatta.com/outlet/
Is my usual destination.

I think a really good waterproof one, rather than a pacamac, will be that sort of price.

hmm that is what I feared, thank you.

if only she was a normal height for her age...

Umbrella?

Trespass

I don't think 30 is a lot for a good waterproof jacket Confused

nonicknameseemsavailable · 16/08/2019 21:41

no it isn't but I am just imagining it getting lost! ideally I would just like a pacamac but they generally don't seem to be waterproof from reviews which has surprised me because the one I used to have was. perhaps it cost more than I am remembering.

Umbrella would probably be pointless as the walk is very exposed so usually too windy to use one round here annoyingly.

I begrudge the fact I am paying so much more than all her friends' parents for everything because she can't wear children's stuff anymore!

If you want properly waterproof, you will be looking at £30 plus (even for a child's one).
Personally I'd suggest something like this www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15914811/hi-gear-stowaway-jacket-women-s-15914811 or buy second hand if you will begrudge the cost. I'd be worried that she wouldn't wear it personally (glares at own DD).

Flapdoodles · 16/08/2019 22:26

I bought my DS (12) an adult pacamac in size small from go outdoors for £20. He has worn it in the rain and didn't get wet. I had originally got him a pacamac from an ebay seller who sells new Regatta clothing at a reasonable cost, but the sizing was very small (size age 14) and just fits 11 year old DD. The quality however is very good.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 16/08/2019 22:27

well there is that redskylastnight although she doesn't like being wet so I think she will probaby wear it - at least to start with until someone tells her it isn't cool!

That one you linked to might do the job thank you.

it is just frustrating that all the kids stuff always seems so much cheaper just because of VAT, sometimes it has more material in too as the teenager stuff seems very wide but never seems long enough. need her to stop growing.

thanks

If she is walking a distance in proper rain she needs something with taped seams otherwise water makes it through the stitching. On short journeys or light rain she may get away with it so the one linked is good for stashing in her bag, but invest in a fully waterproof coat.

My sons walk for 25 minutes and have the emergency one but also had men's £40 one from Regatta outlet as a full waterproof that covers their arse in length.

How much do you usually spend on a coat?

TheJoxter · 18/08/2019 14:14

I find the ones that are fabric with a rubbery coating (like Hatley and Frugi coats although they are obviously little kids ones) are more waterproof than normal ones. Not sure where you get ones like that in adult sizes though!

BrokenWing · 18/08/2019 14:18

If you can try to get something that is also breathable, a long walk in the warm/wet in a blazer with a plastic jacket/mac on top can leave them a bit sticky/unpleasant.

reluctantbrit · 18/08/2019 17:05

Trespass and Regatta do good packamacs but also good proper waterproof ones. DD also has a decent waterproof jacket from Decathlon which was reasonable.

But if you need a coat your DD will on a regular basis you need to pay for it. £30 is not a lot for a good coat.

Also, with a blazer underneath you may need a size up anyway as well.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 19/08/2019 00:12

she has a really good winter coat which is what she will still use out of school but she would boil wearing that over a blazer unless it was snowing. I haven't bought myself a new coat for a good 8 or 9 years so am probably very out of touch with what is a reasonable price.

thanks
