Hi does anyone know why Kew house school does not publish they're A level results? They just say 75% got into their first choice of uni that could mean anything. Would love to hear back from parents. Thanks

Is it 'does not' or just 'haven't yet'?
Maybe they are waiting for remarks to be back before publishing stats?

75% First choice just means they are good at predicting grades!

nerbek · 16/08/2019 10:17

Well they didn't seem to publish for 2018 just wondering why. I've checked through most schools have them posted it would be good to know

That does seem strange. Is the school meant to be 'academic'?

givemesomewineplease · 16/08/2019 13:06

When I went to the open day, we were given the same information. They explained that, because it is a newly opened school, those who took A levels last year were the first (or one of the first years) and there were only a few kids sitting it so the actual grades were not really representative as just one student could massively skew the overall results. I imagine it will be a few years before we will be able to get proper percentages of grades once the first full intake from year 7 make their way through the school.

Mum true it's really hard to decide thanks a lot I like the school but want to make sure it's worth it too;)

Often small schools with less than a certain number of pupils sitting exams don't publish results as it would risk identifying the results of individual pupils too much.

@nerbek I know, it makes it hard to judge. But the kids I know there are very happy and seem to be doing well. I’m also considering it for next year but it feels an unknown quantity in terms of academics. They sell themselves as not being an academic hothouse and doing the best for children to provide a rounded education. However they promise to achieve the best academically for each child. But without results to measure them on it’s taking that on trust. The teachers and SLT are generally experienced though so one would hope they know what they’re doing. They also say they are ‘non-selective’, so not like many of the other West London schools, which select primarily on academics. However they have to select to some degree as they are now over-subscribed. The interview plays a big part in the selection I think so confident personality, sports ability, something to sell yourself on etc probably helpful. But I’m just guessing here!

yes we got the same feeling it's our first choice but anxiety is starting to hit it's all around the corner can't wait for feb!!!

You can find 2018 results on the govt league tables:

www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/schools-by-type?step=default&table=schools&region=313&la-name=hounslow&geographic=la&for=16to18&orderby=ks5.0.TALLPPE_ALEV_1618&orderdir=asc

The average A level grade in 2018 was C+ but only 12 sat, that is not a proper 6th form group as it is still a very new school. They have not announced this years results but I would be surprised if they are as high as Radnor's as that is also a newish but more established school and they got A-B 52%, which compares to 62% A-B at Grey Court across the river. There is a lot of movement for 6th forms which is why the value added score is meaningless so it may make more sense to wait for GCSE results on Thursday as an indicator. But I would say that DD has friends at KH who went from the prep and they are not academic and won't get great results BUT that doesn't mean that the school hasn't added value. Having said that their overall results should at least be on par with a decent comp like Grey Court.

I understand your comments about whether or not it is worth it but that depends on your state school options.

TeddTess · 19/08/2019 15:26

I disagree - Kew House won't get the same number of high achievers as Grey Court. I'd imagine the spread of results at Grey Court to be far higher than that of independent schools where parents tend to actively select the "academicness" of the school. Sure you'll always get outliers, but on the whole the grades gained are narrower.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 19/08/2019 18:07

I take your point Ted but according to MN KH has been difficult to get into for the last 5 years so I would expect this years results to be at least on par with a decent comp if that is true.

Pigeonpair1 · 19/08/2019 19:11

Probably best to be aware that your KHS is no longer a back up school. 12 of the 16 students in my DS class went through the process and only 4 were offered a definite place.

Soontobe60 · 19/08/2019 19:19

Yo do realise, OP, that sending your child to a school with a big % of passes at A level doesn't necessarily mean that they too will achieve good grades? Hard work and intellect isn't catching 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rockylady · 19/08/2019 20:25

Mind you, hard work can be catching. Part of the "right" environment a good school hopefully brings which in turn and expectedly promotes good "hard" work.

nerbek · 19/08/2019 21:54

You would hope after paying almost 160k that good work good Enviroment will bring in the good results... that's why I'm asking is it all worth it?? Once they're happy I feel they will. The attention care friendships brings this with it.

KHS parent here. They don't publish A level stats as the cohort was very small. However, its a fantastic school and I do feel that they get the best out of each student rather than the most impressive stats - after all, they are not a super selective school. Pastoral support has been excellent in case any parents are searching for comments on this school. I do find it funny that when we joined the school people felt sorry for us as they saw it as second rate (we came as expats so not a lot of choice) whereas now all I hear are complaints that people cant get in!

Rockylady · 20/08/2019 14:07

@nerbek in answer to your question, is it worth going private, I would say it depends on the child. If your child is easily distracted, and somewhat influenceable I would say it is all worth it. We have one of those at home and that was the main factor when deciding to go private. If your child will thrive whatever the environment, then trickier if it is worth the money, but I would say depends also on the personality, and whether they will be happiest in what environment. My two cents anyways!

My daughter wants to take Product Design at A level...I hear that KH has a new head of DT...what's she like?
