dictionary & thesaurus for secondary + PE bags

Hi all,

my DD is starting year 7 in Sep and the equipment list includes a dictionary and a thesaurus, but there is no recommended type.

Is it advisable to get pocket ones? Or mini ones? Or just regular ones?

Also, hardback or paperback? What is more practical?

And, it looks like OUP does a combined version (dictionary & thesaurus all in one) does it make sense to just get this one?

Thanks.

Oh, and forgot to ask: what type of PE bags shall we get? DD doesn't do any sports that require extra equipment (not at school anyway), so is it just the string bags for regular PE classes?

Just get little mini ones. I expect she will use them more for homework than actually in school.

Most of the kids I teach use plastic drawstring JD sports bags for PE tbh! So a drawstring bag will be fine.

Thanks, that makes sense.

How about a pencil case, it looks like we need a big one, any recs?

I got the Oxford English Thesaurus for Schools & the similar sized dictionary as mine don't take them to school

I wouldn't personally get a drawstring bag, bit young. But it may be the trend nowadays who knows.

To me a sports rucksack type thing/gym bag would be better.

Plain black nylon or nike/adidas drawstring for PE is ideal if they don't have much kit

Paperback, small dictionary. A dictionary/thesaurus combined is fine.
Drawstring bag for pe, that can fit inside the main school bag.
We got a pencil case with three zipped compartments from whsmith. It's about large purse size. It wasn't used for long, everything goes in the blazer pockets now

My DC have nerve used the dictionary or thesaurus. They use Google instead!

For PE bag you need to think about how it is getting to school and how it will be stored. They seem to vary from just using a plastic bag to full on sports bag.

Pencil case will ideally fit in blazer pocket. Just whatever she wants in terms of look as no one much cares (though I'd suggest not smiggle as that will be babyish pretty soon!). Our school sells a standard stationary pack which comes in a clear plastic wallet, and lots of DC just use that.

Nerve=never

@RedSkyLastNight the dictionary and thesaurus are part of the required equipment list, so Google won't do. I decided to get the mini versions, as we do have a big Oxford dictionary at home.

The school offers lockers but I've no idea how big they are, so maybe some kit and the dictionaries can stay in the locker.

Got a plain drawstring bag for now, we'll see if we need to upgrade to a larger PE bag, I guess it depends on clubs she'll enrol into at school.

Which made me realise, we probably need a sturdy guitar bag now, as the one we have is quite flimsy and doesn't protect the guitar.

We're broke :)

Dictionary and thesaurus were on my DC's equipment list too. We've a few mandatory items that we bought in Year 7 that were never used , so it's worth checking how mandatory, mandatory really is! Though, granted, you probably need to get this from parents of DC already going to the school as it will vary.

My DD just shoves her PE kit in her rucksack. I did get her a drawstring bag, but it seems screwing it up is a preferred option.
