Does anyone else find ballet flats really slippery?

Can’t seem to find any good ballet flats with good enough tread, The first pair we got was from primark, they had some lines in the sole, but when they wore down a little they were extremely slippery, I tried NEXT and bought their patent ballerina shoes, but they are also dangerous. They all seem to have very smooth rubber soles, which dispite being fine on dry surfaces, are extremely dangerous in the wet, particularly I’m told in the toilets, and when walking into the school and down stairs on rain days. We’ve had a few near misses, and I was wondering if any of you have had similar experiences with these shoes, as they are quite popular?

Asda George! I always found them the best for strong soles direct.asda.com/george/kids/shoes/girls-black-patent-butterfly-ballet-school-shoes/GEM694591,default,pd.html?cgid=D25M2G1C15

They are no good for your shins and cause pain in the front lower shin as your feet have to grab the floor to walk. Get shoes with a slight heel

Ballet flats give no support and really are not designed for everyday wear.

Cecilandsnail · 20/07/2019 08:23

I have no idea why people are so obsessed with 'support' when it comes to shoes. You are born with feet perfectly evolved for the job they do. Feet do not need the support of shoes. Bare foot or as near to is much better for the foot and ankle. Not sure about ballet flats with good grip, but I have had a few pairs from rocketdog in the past that have had a good grippy sole.

Ballet flats weren’t allowed at my DD’s secondary school.

RandomNameChange415 · 20/07/2019 08:35

Bare feet are very different to completely flat shoes though. Ask any podiatrist.
If you can get her into brogues then they’re a really good option. Why are you buying school shoes in late July anyway?

BubblesBuddy · 20/07/2019 08:58

Why not in July? At least there is a choice and it’s job done! I think ballet flats are not suitable for all day heavy use. Brogues or loafers are better.

growlingbear · 20/07/2019 09:01

@Cecilandsnail - our bare feet can grip with toes and roll easily against the surface we walk on. A thin-soled ballet flat disables this action. Good shoes replicate it - that's necessary support.

madcatladyforever · 20/07/2019 09:04

As a podiatrist I loathe ballet flats. They are dreadful for your feet, I'd like to pile them onto a giant bonfire.
Not only will they eventually destroy your feet and give you hammer toes they are incredibly ugly and I have not met one person who looks nice in them. They make everyone look short and squat arghhhhhh.

Shoe police are here 😂 get whatever shoes you want

daisypond · 20/07/2019 10:06

OP can’t find what she wants, which is why she’s asking.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/07/2019 11:28

@madcatladyforever, thank you for your professional insights. My warning is based on personal experience and too many years pounding pavements doing the school run in very flat shoes. I now have problems with my feet which are directly related to not wearing supportive enough footwear, so I know all too well from experience

GermaineBunbury · 20/07/2019 14:06

I think these would be extremely suitable for a slippery bathroom area: www.amazon.com/Trolls-Rainboot-TLF500-Girls-Toddler/dp/B06WV8MXZJ?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Mine are Clark's, really grippy, still going strong 5 years later
