Has your child’s school set homework for the summer?

Ours have set reading from a list and preparing for a presentation in the first week back.
I’m not too fussed about it as the more books for my not very enthusiastic readers, the better.
I’d be interested to know what other schools do.

Very little actual homework has been set (apart from in Art) but they all plan to do their own independent study.

Each of them has (separately) decided to do about an hour each day over the holidays (apart from when we are away) e.g.

  • Humanities: going through notes from the past year and making sure they are complete.
  • English: learning quotes from set texts and practising paragraphs discussing literary technique and analysis.
  • MFL: self-testing vocabulary.
  • Sciences: learning definitions and practising questions.
  • Maths: practising questions.

The impetus is coming from them, not from the school or from me.

Comefromaway · 19/07/2019 17:28

No although dd in year 12 in her report has been told some areas she should work on.

Neither of them have ever had holiday homework (2 children, 3 different schools)

SunnySomer · 19/07/2019 17:29

Nothing at all (just finished Y7)
I don’t think independent study would occur to him in a million years! Our project is to learn to cook this summer

BelindasGleeTeam · 19/07/2019 17:33

s a school we set homework for those in GSE and A level classes.

This is normally recap work based on checking how much they've retained/learned over the year, or in the case of Yr10 and 12, fieldwork based work (Geography) ready for September.

KS3 get nothing.

TheFirstOHN · 19/07/2019 17:35

SunnySomer that's a great idea, and something I'd like to do with DS2, who is a bit weak in the life-skills department.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 19/07/2019 17:53

TheFirstOHN that’s impressive! are your kids sitting their GCSEs next year?
Learning to cook is a great idea.

ILiveInSalemsLot
2 are doing GCSEs next year and 1 is doing A-levels.
When they were in KS3 they didn't do much over the summer; although they did read a fair bit and they sometimes did a bit of Maths practice in the last week of the holidays.

TeenTimesTwo · 19/07/2019 18:13

None here, just finished y9.

I will be doing some maths and English with DD trying to solidify maths and to try, yet again, to work on using fullstops and not messing up basic homophones.

RowingMermaid · 19/07/2019 19:00

Yes, year 8 although it doesn't have to be in until the end of September but it is a project, not something that can be done in 30 minutes.

It doesn't seem to be cementing any learning that they have done, but they are doing an A3 poster for display and are given a list of subjects (they are to choose which "club" to join) and then to do one of the listed topics within that subject.

I suppose I would be okay with it if my son hadn't already been chosen for a specific club in year 7 due to academic ability and the club has stopped. There have been other schemes such as a reading circle which again has disappeared. It just feels like this is yet another gimmick.

indy69 · 19/07/2019 19:18

My DD is year 9 going to year 10. The school has sent out a transition booklet and that have set tasks in each subject of their choice. Maths and science have topic tests as soon as they start but the rest is just reading and some observational drawing for art.

Mumski45 · 20/07/2019 09:06

This is summer homework for my yr 8 DS. I think it's a great idea.

Has your child’s school set homework for the summer?
SweetMarmalade · 20/07/2019 10:50

No homework set from any department.

I’m (trying) to encourage Ds (Y7) to use Corbett Maths 5 a day, at least 3 times a week. I’ve also just ordered some more reading books from Amazon. He was an avid reader but this has been sliding a bit recently.

I’m also going to do as another poster suggested and try and teach a bit of cooking skills over the holidays. Although, I’m pretty pants myself so it should prove interesting.

Apart from that, we’re spending a few days away, going to do outdoorsy stuff, weather permitting and just enjoy the break. It’s been a pretty intense year.

avocadochocolate · 20/07/2019 15:46

Yes - comprehensive - both DCs doing A Levels and GCSEs next summer.

Older DC had GCSE to A Level 'bridging' homework last summer.

Taswama · 20/07/2019 18:10

Nothing for Y7 DS. I’ve told him he needs to do Duolingo every day and was going to introduce the second language that he starts in September in August but he’s already started it himself.
Was also planning to get him to read the book they will be studying in September, learn to type and some English from the revision book as he has been put down a set in English from September.
He suggested we go to park run as his PE homework! (We’ve been a few times but don’t go regularly).

MarchingFrogs · 20/07/2019 19:22

Year 11 moving into year 12 here - work set in at least two of the subjects he will be taking there if he has done well enough to stay on. Some kind of Art project, which seems to involve clearing the accumulated clothes, books etc off the tub chair in his room. Could be a good thing. Depending on where the clothes and books etc get 'cleared' to... 241 Maths questions, of which he had done 97 the last twice I enquired.

Physics may have set something he hasn't mentioned. For Eng. Lit. I think he is intending to do something, not sure whether set or off his own bat.

(Not sure whether DD has a reading list for her university course, but the impression given is that she intends to arrive in September as a tabula rasa).

ILiveInSalemsLot · 20/07/2019 19:26

I like yours Mumski.

None of mine ever have (different schools).

PenguinsRabbits · 20/07/2019 21:22

Ours haven't been set anything yet though 3 days to go.

Was just planning on them having a break though will be doing lots of sports / nature things on holiday like canoeing with beavers, seeing moose, sea kayaking, canyoning, white water rafting etc. When were are here we will do aqua park and meeting up with friends.

They both love maths so would imagine at some point they will ask to do some.

bigKiteFlying · 21/07/2019 13:28

They never have previously - but there's are lots of changes happening in the school at the minute - DS just finished yr7 has some and yr9 DD1 has some suggestions – it’s maths, English and bit of science.

Ds has been getting more homework than DD1 had in same years – I think it’s a good thing.

We tend to be doing maths and spelling throughout the year so keep doing that - and suggesting to DD1 staring to read the books and look through notes is a good idea - she currently receptive.

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/07/2019 14:06

End of yr 9 and they have set science homework for the summer. I was thinking of trying to get DS to just revise what he's done this year using maths genie but I'm not holding out much hope!

Beesandtrees · 22/07/2019 09:12

‘Bridging’ homework for dc . Just finished yr11. Hoping to do A levels at new school. So far they have been sent homework for 2/4 of the A levels they want to do. Both subjects have said dc might want to wait before doing it and see what their result is first !

BlueChampagne · 22/07/2019 13:48

Just finished Y7. They can do a book review over the summer, but it's flagged as optional.

ag54 · 23/07/2019 01:42

Since Year 6 my DD has had homework and projects set for her by the school every single holiday and she is just about to go into Year 11. Most of the homework was never marked and so much time was wasted bullying her to complete the tasks set. She is now inundated with more homework which has to be completed by the start of term in September. I will be so glad when she finishes her GCSE's so that we can all have some time off to enjoy the summer holidays!!!!!!

sitlux · 23/07/2019 08:47

Year 6 going on year 7 here.

The secondary school emailed us a reading challenge, asking to pick at least one book from each of 6 categories.

Also, children have to do a "Who am I" challenge that can take any form - but must fit in a shoe box and ideally should incorporate some/all of the 5 school values.

They get merit points based on how many books they read and how creative they are, and they also get added to a prize draw.

Mae99 · 31/07/2019 23:26

My child’s school sets her homework every holiday. This summer she has to complete a biology booklet and study it for starting her GCSE course next year.
