How much to charge for math tutoring by a student?

Could you please help us on this?

DS is planning to do some math tutoring for GCSE students during summer holidays. He has just finished his own A level and is very good at math, and has years of experience for providing math help for student in his school.

Do you think how much is the reasonable hourly rate?

Why not go on a tutor website such as tutorhunt and see what the norm is in your area?

TheFirstOHN · 25/06/2019 12:11

DS2 is a year younger but charges £10 per hour.

RedSkyLastNight , thanks. We shall have a look.

TheFirstOHN , Thanks. £10 per hour sounds quite reasonable.

£10 is very cheap! I would do at least £15- he has very recent knowledge of the curriculum and experience. Don’t sell him short. Local schools often need adhoc tutors too and they pay around £20 so worth checking too.

I paid £10 to a 6th former ten years ago. Would think at least £15 now.

Depends where you are but one of dd's friends gets £25 ph Shock

NoBaggyPants · 25/06/2019 14:55

He's 18 with no formal knowledge of teaching. £10 is fine.

It depends if you are in a high demand area as well, if you are, then normal tutor rates are much higher. I would charge £15 as an absolute minimum. If he's excellent at maths and knows the curriculum, he may be a bargain! Remember you don't get paid for preparation which might be quite a lot of time initially.

£10 /hour about right for someone who has just sat A'Level Maths.
Maths tutors (Maths degree & PGCe ) charge around £28-30 per hour in my part of England.

My dd did English tutoring in yr 13, having got great GCSEs but obv no teaching exp. I am a qualified teacher so could support her. She charged £15 per hour, I thought that was about right. £10 seems a bit cheap - would he need to do much prep?

I used to tutor MFL at sixth form and charged £5/hour in the late 80s!!

£10 is definitely too low.

Tutoring is not very poplar in our area, It would be quite difficult to get started. He is also checking the online tutoring at the moment.
