When someone describes a school as "liberal," do they mean it is left leaning/socialist?

When I descreibe a school as liberal I mean it has a focus on the arts as well as academia and encourages its children to be independent thinkers who come to their own views on matters.

No not left leaning/socialist. But not to many tedious obsessive rules, often associated with uniform, meaningless ritual or in the case of a boarding school what pupils do in their free time. In a liberal leaning boarding school the relationship between pupils/staff is also likely to be much less formal.
Also encouraging pupils to be themselves, this obviously includes free thinking and developing their own views and opinions but also the feeling that they don’t have to conform i.e. feel free to walk out of step with their fellow pupils if they wish too.
Lastly again I agree a broad curriculum with equal emphasis on the arts in the broadest sense of the word as well as the sciences.

Is the Westminster School Pancake Greaze a meaningless ritual? I think it is fantastic.
