Toilet breaks and behaviour points

Had a run in with my DDs teacher and head of year yesterday and still fuming. She's15. She drinks a lot of water , always has, encouraged by me- she also goes to the loo frequently - stands to reason. My other girls and me the same. She finishes one hour long lesson and has to go straight to another hour long lesson on a classroom on the edge of the school away from the toilets - so she nips to the toilet on route and is therefore a few minutes (6) late for class. They do not allow any time between classes for a rest room break. She gets behaviour points every time this happens and ends up in a twenty minute lunch time detention. Just to put this in perspective - she got a behaviour point for stopping to do up her shoe lace on the way back into class after a fire alarm practice - she got a behaviour point for having her bag on the table ( she was getting out her work) she got a behaviour point for talking in class ( she asked the kid next to her for the form they needed for the lesson - nothing else) and the kids in her class say and she agrees 'this teacher really does not like you does she!!' I'm sure many of you might think it reasonable to expect a child to go two hours without a toilet break - but we aren't all built the same are we? I'm staggered by some kids who seem to never go to the loo and never drink - I think drinking plenty of water is healthy as is going to the loo when you need to. In Ireland they have two toilets in every classroom in my experience - brilliant idea - why penalize the child? Angry

My son's school is getting more and more like this and I can't stand it! It's more like a prison than a place for learning. What do the school say when you complain?

‘Toilet break gate’ is a regular thread here. Anyone who has actually worked in a school knows that kids use toilet breaks for a rest/break when they have no need to use the toilet. Experienced teachers can normally judge urgent need from lesson avoidance.

However it is easy to make a teacher using judgment sound like a harsh prison guard and that is what a lot on here try to do.

People drink way too much water these days based on some discredited research. If you are ‘always drinking and needing the toiley’ You either have diabetes or are drinking too much and need to cut down. It can be almost like an addiction.

Being 6 minutes late to a 1 hour lesson means you miss 10% of it. If you are interrupting your own and others’ learning, some form of sanction is appropriate.

Clearly I have no idea of the individual circumstances here and maybe the teacher is picking on your daughter. However, in general, my sympathy lies with schools and teachers in this issue.

If she needs to pee every hour get her down to your GP.... sorry but a fit and healthy teen should be able to hold on for at least a couple of hours. Peeing too much is a concern.

I think a toilet break every hour is a lot unless you're on your period or have a physical issue. How does she cope with double lessons? (110 minutes plus 5 minutes in between so total 115 minutes here) They've been expected to only use the loo every 2 hours since primary school. (Break-lunch-home time)

nutsfornutella · 02/04/2019 18:43

A behaviour point for doing shoelaces and putting the bag on the table (unless the teacher explicitly said not too) is obviously very petty. I can't comment about whether 6 minutes late is reasonable either as we obviously don't know how many minutes it takes to get to the toilets) My kids only had a toilet in the classroom in Reception.

Wolfiefan · 02/04/2019 18:45

She shouldn’t need to go to the toilet every hour. She’s either over hydrating, unwell or trying to get out of lesson time.

SexNotJenga · 02/04/2019 18:48

So.... She goes to the toilet 16 times a day (once an hour, 8 hours sleep)? She needs to drink less. Or see the doctor.

Cherim90 · 02/04/2019 18:48

Am I the only one who thinks a toliet break every hour is not unreasonable, not everyone is the same and can hold a pee, and why should they? I've always been one of those people who need a wee more than others. The school are being picky and it's a real shame these days because there are far more real issues that could be being dealt with x

7circlemats · 02/04/2019 19:09

Can't you ask the school for a toilet pass for your daughter if this is becoming an issue?

MsRabbitRocks · 02/04/2019 19:10

she got a behaviour point for stopping to do up her shoe lace on the way back into class after a fire alarm practice

Actually, to pick up on this point, if it was back from fire practice, this will be amongst a large crowd of hundreds (a lot of secondaries have up to 1500 pupils plus staff) and this could be obstructive and cause a ‘stampede effect if anyone was to trip over her. It’s why pupils also shouldn’t bring their school bags when the fire alarm goes off. They could drop their bag, someone trip over it and so on.
It’s not petty.

And she doesn’t need to go to the toilet every hour. Over hydration can be dangerous

Are the behaviour points only being given by one particular teacher or by several different teachers? If one teacher then I'd think there might ne an issue with that relationship. If multiple teachers then I'd be more inclined to think there's more to it.

Piss troll again ??

Heratnumber7 · 02/04/2019 19:32

Your daughter is drinking too much. There's no value in keeping drinking if you're excreting the excess every hour.

MsRabbitRocks · 02/04/2019 20:11

Piss troll again ??

I did report to MNHQ as the OP has not posted before-just in case!

LovingLola · 02/04/2019 20:15

In case this is a real situation, how much water does she drink ?
And is it just in school that she needs to use the toilet every hour?
