BTECs versus GCSEs anyone help?

My DD is quite academic and predicted to do well in GCSEs. She has options to choose, some are BTECs, are these looked at differently to GCSEs?
She is in the top 5% of her year in most subjects. Should she be going for the GCSE options or does it make no difference? If any one has any advice I would be very grateful as I didn't go to university and feel a bit ignorant about eduction now

How many BTECs? One or two and 8 GCSEs - fine. Four BTECs and four GCSEs - not fine.

Comefromaway · 28/03/2019 23:23

If she’s academic then the odd Btec in avocational subject like drama or dance or sport is fine. As an alternative to computer science or science or more than then it’s not as academically renowned.

In general, GCSEs are offered by grammar schools and nothing else. That tells you what quite a few academic DC take. If she has a special interest in a Btec, then take it but most university high flyers don’t need a Btec in anything at 16. A levels don’t need BTecs.

I would say it totally depends on her career route. My son is doing all GCSE's but chose Engineering as a BTech and would really like to pursue engineering so to me this is to his advantage.

Does she plan to attend university? If so, you may want to steer her away from BTECs. Some universities will take BTECs as equal to A levels but those that are more academically minded would prefer students who have completed GCSEs and A levels (or count a full BTEC National Diploma as equivalent to a single A level) as GCSEs and A levels prepare students better for the academic demands of university studies and style of evaluation.

Btec Engineering at GCSE isn’t an advantage to MEng applications down the line. It’s not needed and very many schools don’t offer it. Neither is it needed at A level and it isn’t an advantage in that universities don’t prefer it above high grade A levels. What it does do is give a taster prior to university. Apprenticeships might think differently.

Thank you for the info
She is just choosing one to do a year earlier and I have advised her to do a gcse as it will be one less exam when she has he others. Only two she could choose from were classic civilisation or statistics. She has chosen cc. I would have preferred statistics but never mind . Think will be better than the BTEC in enterprise

BubblesBuddy, that wasn't a very encouraging reply Sad my son is not doing it instead of GSCE's or to replace A Levels he is doing it in addition and at a school with amazing facilities. I can't really see why it would not be good for him to get a feel of the subject.

titchy · 29/03/2019 13:10

Oh one BTEC won't make the slightest bit of difference I guarantee you.

nutsfornutella · 29/03/2019 17:25

Ds1 has a level 2 BTEC (GCSE equivalents) and 10 GCSEs and taking level 3 BTEC (A-level equivalents) and is (hopefully!) off to university in the Autumn.

BubblesBuddy · 29/03/2019 19:53

I said it wasn’t required. And it isn’t. I agreed it gave a taster prior to university. The idea that it confers an advantage is misplaced and certainly students with top grade A levels get places at the best universities. That doesn’t mean BTec people don’t but they are not preferred. That’s all!

Don’t take any qualification early and drop a grade. Less is more. Some universities insist on one sitting now.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/04/2019 08:57

Definitely less subjects in one sitting with good results. Rather then numerous sittings in numerous subjects with mediocre results.
