Illness and GCSES

Y11 DS has been ill, hospital admission, missed 2 1/2 weeks of school (including a week of mocks) and is now back at school part-time. His illness is likely to be ongoing. I kept the school informed, especially once we had a diagnosis. The only contact I had from the school was in reply to my emails.

Today DS has told me that he has a performance exam (Drama GCSE) on Thursday, which accounts for 20% of his mark. On Friday his teacher told him to focus on his duologue, as that affects his partner, and not worry about his monologue.

Needless to say, DS is worried. Although he had known his pieces almost by heart, he has completely forgotten them and has to learn them from scratch again, while trying to catch up on missed work.

AIBU to be annoyed that the school have not contacted me about this exam? I did not know about it, as it is not listed in the exam timetable posted online.

Surely, in order for the school to apply for special circumstances for DS, they need to have the relevant info from me, doctor's note, etc?

I shall email the school about the exam, but I don't know whether IWBU to express my annoyance, too.

I'm surprised they've been in touch, but it might be that they're trying not to add stress/pressure. I'd speak to them with an open mind.

I’m guessing exams like that wouldn’t be on the exam timetable as the dates aren’t set? It’s possible that as your DS is back at school that it was simply overlooked that the drama exam might be an issue - it wouldn’t be on anyone’s radar except the drama teacher.

Can you email the drama teacher directly to find out what is going on?

Re special consideration - that would be dealt with by the exams officer and can be applied for after the exams - it might make sense to wait until the full impact on everything is known. Contact the exams officer to see what evidence they will want.

If special consideration can be applied for after exams, then I understand the lack of urgency from the school. Thanks for explaining that.

I will email regarding it, but not be annoyed.
