Morrisby Profile - any info?

I had a letter from DD's school asking if we wanted to pay for a Morrisby Profile at a cost of £84. Says it will be useful for A-Level choices, careers advice etc

Anyone know anything about this? If you've used it was it good or is it a con?

Many thanks.

Our school provides it free of charge. They are probably helpful if your child has no idea what A levels they want to do or what careers. It is basically a series of test which say what subjects and careers would suit your child.

My DD1 did it but DD2 didn’t. It has some use but can be useless! The child does a series of tests and questions that are designed to see which careers might be the best fit. The issue is, if you know what subjects you are good at, you probably stick with them. It should never replace good advice on Facilitating subjects and making sensible and correct choices.

It looks at what the child likes, (work outside, with hands, writing, etc) attributes and ability. My DDs came out as newspaper editor or solicitor. She’s a barrister so it wasn’t far out. However she was good at languages. No one explained she could convert to law after her degree at the time she took Morrisby so you need to see it as interesting information but not accurate and it doesn’t replace good advice or knowing your own strengths. Some of DDs friends thought the summaries and suggested jobs were utterly hilarious! It does depend on how DC answer the questions.

DD2 wanted arts so knew what she was interested in and we decided Morrisby wasn’t of value as she knew what A levels she was going to do. We had time to evaluate degree courses ourselves.

So if DC is good at certain subjects, Morrisby doesn’t change that. It can suggest careers but I think you can do that research yourself.

My DS did this at his school and it was great. We're trying to find somewhere for DD to do it.

I did the morrisby test at school about 20 years ago! I have ended up in one the recommended careers and I love it Grin may be useful if your child doesn't know what they want to do but even if they do, it might throw up something similar that they might not have considered!

You have three years at university to look at careers. If you want a vocational career, you tend to know that and choose A levels accordingly. At the very least do one Facilitating subject. DD developed an interest in law at university, not through doing Morrisby.

DD1 did something similar and it came up with Medic, Journalist or Accountant, so really not helpful at all. She was an all rounder, so it kind of made sense, but wasn't useful. She ended up choosing what was of interest to her, followed a similar course at Uni, and now works in similar environment, but nothing that was suggested by the test. Needless to say, we won't bother with DD2.

It's not just about careers advice. Also gives info on academic potential for certain areas ie verbal, numerical, spatial, mechanical etc (which of course leads to potential career info, but is useful in its own right.

DD’s school have a free version and a paid for version about £28. Trouble is many jobs our children will be doing don’t exist yet.

Waste of space. My older DS did one and it told him to be a plumber ... at the time, he was doing work experience at a major London auction house and is now doing a PhD.
