GCSE English tutoring

DS in in Yr 10 and so this time next year will be nearly on with GCSEs 😯

He really struggles with English, not helped by the fact he is not a reader (despite loving books when he was younger and and seeing me with a book in my hand most evenings) and has had approximately 6 different English teachers since September. The school are aware that this is far from ideal and are doing all they can to get some stability to the English department.

He's currently working at a grade 4 in English whereas for context, his Maths is a 6 and Science is a 7. Do you think a private English tutor will help push his grade up? Even if he is never going to love the subject? And if so, do we look at getting one in after Easter or wait until the start of Year 11?

The school do really push the students in Year 11 and run Saturday schools and extra periods for the whole of this GCSE year. However I just have the worry that the jump from a grade 4 to a 5-6 might just be too difficult for DS given this stage in the school year. What do you think?

I think English is such a tricky subject. Maths and Science just seem easier to try and work through as there are tests all over Hegarty Maths and Educake (used at DS's school) but English is so different! 🤔

Yes I'd be going with a tutor after Easter the easier he gets started the better. Are his mocks in November/December?

We are in a similar situation. DS is in year 10, and at start of year 10 was predicted a 5.
We got him a tutor weekly via Skype. I've got to admit it works out £££ for a weekly hour and he has extra English work to submit each week but we're starting to see an improvement in his grades..... Up to a 6-7 now.
They seem to spend a lot of time going through his set texts and the feedback he gets he really listens to (rather than my nagging about incorrect punctuation).
So definitely I'd recommend it, especially via Skype for teen boys in particular.

I should say I don't want to look like I'm advertising but if you'd like me to point you in the direction of the guy we use pm me

Thanks both, I think I'll look into it now. I hadn't thought of Skype tutors, there are a few tutors round here so I'd thought of looking at those. I presume if there were two children they would probably charge double? And do you generally have an hour a week? I have no idea about all this...!
