Hi I'm new to mumsnet. Just wanted advice. Would you guys recommend a cheaper new build beautiful house in okish area with reasonably ok school or an old built not so nice house in a very expensive area but best performing school.
I'm stuck in a dilemma.

I'd go for the older house. It depends how not so nice it is?

Hi SMaCM, hope u well. The older house is in bad state of repair and would cost around 20k at least to get it to standard. Financially would be a huge strain on us. The said house is in Newton Mearns in East renfrewshire and the other area with the new built house is Cumbaslang.

Older and better performing school.

I would be wary anyway of buying a new house as many of them now have annual management fees which can be sold on once the developers have left and seriously decrease the resale value of the house.

It depends on which critter I have affected the performance rating of each school.

Schools' performance can change very quickly if the Head or key staff choose to move on.

I'd go for the better house.

It would depend on the time lag between buying and DC actually starting secondary.
Schools can change very quickly. If DC are just starting primary now, there is no guarantee that a decent school will still be decent in 7 years time.
I would go for the house you prefer.

Depends how old your children are. Between my child starting primary and now in Y6, two of our local secondary schools have been put into special measures when previously they were deemed to be Good by Ofsted.

How about new build in area with a better school e.g. Strathaven. Not quite East Ren but lovely school.

0412435R · 07/03/2019 16:34

Strathaven is a little far for travel. I work in north glasgow and would need to commute to work every day.
Any thoughts on cumbaslang?

Me? I'd chose the better school Smile

Choose the better school. It's for your kids who can then pay for your retirement home. A house is just a house but education is everything!

Agree Strathaven to North Glasgow wouldn't be great. Dont know the Cambuslang schools. DD has one friend who lives in the area but she goes to to Fernhill (I suspect she would have gone private regardless). You could have a look at school dashboard to see how they perform against their virtual comparators. Doesn't tell the whole story though.

Thank you guys. We looked into school performances and opted for the better school. Though the house is older and is more expensive but weighing it against DC education we thought it's best to give them the best opportunity.
Hopefully should be moving there next month xxx
