Dd 13 came home saying people can see into the female toilets as the doors have been removed on the entrance. Cubicles don’t have full length doors so people passing can see when someone’s using them.

AIBU to think this is unacceptable?
No explanation ! This was the beginning of the week so thought they may have been painting over half term and not finished but they are still off!

I do think things are different in a girls school. I should have clarified that in my school (the one I described with the disgusting behaviour in the toilets), there are no girls. Probably explains the state of the toilets!!

Loads of public loos don't have a main door to them. Can't really see the issue I have to confess. Except for the smell that must emanate from them (especially the boys' ugh).

Lots of public loos don’t have a main door but they don’t have clear sight of the cubicles from the corridor. It’s always around a corner.

Well, I was going to suggest that if you had a girl who could pee into the toilet roll dispenser then probably you should sign her up for gymnastics immediately! But since they're boys doing these things, it's not as impressive.

Not for the first time, feeling very pleased dd will be in a girls school from September

There are good reasons as detailed upthread as to why not too closed in toilets can reduce unsocial behaviour.

However, these need to be properly designed. I've been in schools where the toilets are a bit like those in service stations - wide, open access with no main door, but with cubicles out of sight from outside the toilets and sinks nearest to the door.

These work fine and are different to just taking the main door off, which doesn't provide a reasonable degree of privacy.

Girls toilets are notorious for being disgusting in Schools, colleges and pubs and clubs. Girls can be and are minging. When I was a cleaner I hated being allocated the girls toilet.
We never had doors into the toilets when I was a school just individual cubicles once in the room. And that was 30 years ago so it's not a new thing

There are no door on the toilets at dd's school. I think it's a great idea. She says no one smokes in the toilets like they used to when I was at school.

I think your average adult female would be very unhappy if they rocked up to the bogs and they were all open with no doors

For that reason i am unsure why childrens toilets are being left so open and we are expecting children to just get on with it

I am very pleased that the toilets at the locsl school have doors on

Hi all thanks for your responses. I just need to clarify

  1. In theory if toilets are designed open plan I have no issue
  2. These are not designed open plan , the door has just been removed leaving cubicles in full view of the corridor.
  3. My child reports that you can hear everything from the corridor, unwrapping an ST / tampon/ plop! No privacy !
  4. If we want children to be trustworthy we have to place trust in them and if we want them to act with maturity we need to treat them with maturity.
  5. Primary schools don’t take doors off with toddlers blocking with full toilet rolls! Why should teenagers not be treated with respect and dignity.
  6. Would those agreeing that it’s ok think the same if the door was taken off in their work toilets?
