I'm a secondary school teacher and would say definitely yes. If you start with this level of intensive revision the chances are by year 11 he'll have burnt out and be so fed up with it you'll struggle to get him to so any worthwhile revision in year 11.

y9 is just the beginning of gcse work, which will be repeated and developed over time. He does not need to be revising regularly yet or he will bore of it well before exams.

Wolfiefan · 10/02/2019 21:01

Two hours every night? Totally unnecessary.
He needs to do Hw and ensure he knows the best way to revise. He could look over his notes at the end of each day. In Y9 he may well not have started GCSE courses anyway. Pointless.

Thanx for your advise I think I will cut it down to just doing his homework when he gets it

Thanx

On top of homework? Way too much. He will either refuse to do anything come GCSEs or will have completely burnt out.
When does he have time for hobbies, sport and relaxing?
Mine didn't start proper revision until Y11, apart from end of year exams. Even that was a long, hard slog.

paprickapaull · 10/02/2019 21:10

No just to do his homework
I think he will be pleased

Your son’s spare time at this stage would be much better spent developing those extra curricular interests, hobbies and activities that will set him apart further down the line, - and not just for UCAS applications in the future, but also for his own mental health. Fitting in some time doing nothing, or just being with friends outside of the classroom, is really important at this stage.

My dd is in year 11 and his school have done the 3 year GCSE course. He's currently in the middle of his second set of mocks and is revising hard.

If you were making your ds revise now it would be pretty pointless anyway.
Most of the syllabus won't have even been taught yet. There are so many revision classes at ds's school and many several subjects have finished the curriculum so lessons in school are pure revision.

I bought my ds the CGP revision guides for all subjects from WHSmith and they've been most helpful. He's been revising from them since year 10. I would wait until next year and do the same.
