Do your children pronounce any words differently to you?

Of course if one parent is foreign this will have an influence, but have you noticed a different accent amongst children, where both parents are British?

In London, many youngsters are growing up talking in an urban dialect but have you spotted any influence of American TV shows/Youtube?

I have noticed children are pronouncing "thank you" like "thenk you" and exclaiming the word 'what!' sounds like waht rather than woht

My kids all speak differently to DH and I. We are both midlanders, but now live in London, where our kids have lived all their lives. If you asked them whether it was cAstle or cARstle, they'd tell you cAstle. But that's not what they use when speaking naturally... :o

My two are posh speak properly because I'm a northerner and their dad isn't. And they've been raised somewhere that speaks more RP than where I was dragged up.

Youngest plays using American accents sometimes when engrossed in imaginative play but it's not common.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/02/2019 22:50

Mine often use American pronunciations.

The only examples I can think of off-hand are privacy and schedule, but I'm sure there are lots of others.

Well, dh and I are Australian in London. 4 dc five years apart and all have diff accents. Dd 1 is more posh. Dd2 slips between who she plays with. Dd3 drops her ‘t’ in words and dd4 does that thing of pronouncing ‘g’ in ing words.its quite bizarre!

Me, Dh and DD1have different regional English accents to each other - south London, Yorkshire and Geordie and DD2 is Glaswegian. Lots of different vowel sounds and phases for things which we tend to mix and match.

youbethemummylion · 11/02/2019 23:23

Mine do because they are Mackems and I am a Yorkshire lass.

freddiethegreat · 13/02/2019 20:39

Yes, certainly. I am a somewhat softened Yorkshire lass & DS has lived in the south west all his life & sounds like it!

I sometimes think I'm the only person in the world who pronounces garage as 'ga-raj' and not 'garridge'.
My DC and DGC all day garridge.

Areyouongluedear · 13/02/2019 21:37

Mine is soooo well spoken and I’m common as muck Grin

FlagFish · 13/02/2019 21:37

My DC all say haitch for the letter H, whereas me and DH say aitch. That’s the only one I can think of.
