Current grade vs aspirational target?

Can someone explain this to me please!

If someone has a current grade of 2.8 and their aspirational target is 4 and they are apparently on track what does that mean?

Year 10 Jan report, due to do GCSEs next year and I'm not sure how they will be able to gain a 4 if their current grade is 2.8. What can we do to up the grades? I'm a step parent and very confused about this system! Seems I'll be too thick to help anyway!

'Current grade' 2.8 sounds a relatively ridiculous grade, but it depends on the system the school is using.

I guess they mean 'if they took the GCSE tomorrow we think they would just miss a grade 3.
'aspirational' target sounds a bit of a stretch, as in they don't really think they will get there but good to try? I would clarify with them whether they are saying 'on track' to pass or not, as the grade 4 is often the key to courses post GCSE.

For DD1 we just got 'predicted' grade which meant 'at current level and progress and attitude this is our best guess as to what they will end up with'.

Check with the school but I would interpret that as they are currently just below a 3 and are expected to get a 4 in the GCSE.

To improve grade you could go through work with them, or get a tutor - you could also ask the teacher. Ours also have access to online resources for certain subjects which presumably should help. You can also buy textbooks from WH Smiths or similar which may help. Though a lot is just hard work. If it were mine I would be asking what they didn't understand then try and look into that part more and help them with it though as kids get older they get more resistant to help and it gets harder to help too.
