Food GCSE AAQ 8585 - any experience

DS has to take a practical subject at GCSE despite not wanting to do anything practical. We were considering food as he has good science knowledge and the other practical options are even more unsuitable. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this course and was happy to share.

Don't know about that course but my ds1 did food GCSE and liked it.

Also when I was a teacher a lot if my form did food and showed me pix of their practicals which looked Amazing!

If he prefers it to DT or textiles then go for it. Being able to cook is always good.

My DD is doing this GCSE this year and has enjoyed it as it does provide some back up to Biology. The practical element is 50% of the marks. Of this part (15% is an experiment, so taking an idea and using different ingredients to see the difference & 35% is a series of practical's showing different level of skills). examples of skills are filleting fish or chicken, making pasta/pastry etc. You also evaluate the practical's to show what can be improved as they are based on improving the diet etc. A good food tech teacher is vital. My DD has enjoyed the course and it is definitely useful for them later in life. It is not an easy subject and it has been stressful at times for all of us. However, if you are supportive and have the ability to keep buying a variety of ingredients for them to practice on, then I would go for it.
