Ds has a scholarship day tomorrow at an independent school. Its a sports scholarship but includes two interviews, three tests and three sports! So it will be quite gruelling.

Does anyone have any ideas about the kind of thing he may be asked in interview? We've covered Why do you want to come here? and who is a role model you admire, and we are trying to cover the news as best we can - he's quite good on Brexit!

I'm not too worried as he likes talking to adults and usually has quite a lot to say for himself (hmm), but I think he'd feel better well prepared. Thank you.

No sports scholarship experience, mydc sat music.

Questions included things like ‘what does music mean to you/what place in your life’, and how would you feel without music in your life.

She was also tested on aspects like supporting others in a group situation, so for sports potentially looking at coaching/encouragement capabilities.

Great thank you. He has a sports leaders award thing, I will dig out the details as I think he's forgotten them!! He really enjoys working as a team hopefully that will come across. I'm a bit worried as he's coming from state school and I imagine the majority will be from preps where they might be supported through this kind of thing.

Experience from academic scholarships, but being shown a picture of a painting and being asked to talk about it.

Which historical figure would you like to have dinner with?
Why?

Fingers are crossed for your DS!

One of mine was asked " Is there anything you'd like to ask me?"
She replied " I'd be fascinated to hear what led you to becoming a head teacher "
That used up the rest of the interview.
Got a scholarship.

ooh yes that's a point - the inevitable is there anything you would like to ask?

I think he might say will it affect me being able to play football if my league changes to a saturday league Hmm

Evidencebased - very funny.

Academic scholarship but DD was asked what sort of job interested her and she said "studying penguins in the South Pole" that threw them a little bit.

DS academic scholarship was asked "What is art?" Obviously not a right or wrong answer just looking to see how his mind worked.

best advise would be not to get stressed about it, if he is passionate it will shine through. Best of luck to him.

Thanks. He's really passionate and pretty knowledgeable. Fingers crossed.

He looked a bit intimidated going in this morning - on first glance at the kit that the others were wearing I think he might be the only state school boy there! Hey ho. Hopefully he'll enjoy at least some of it!

My DD had a pre selection day at a well known independent school and was the only one from a state school. Some of the other uniforms were unbelieveably flash - as were a few of the parents! However, she was fine and the Deputy Head came up to us at the end of the day and said she was the only girl they had ever seen who had chosen to swim the butterfly stroke in the pool when asked to swim a length! A parent then whispered to us, "Yours is in then!"

This has nothing to do with a sports scholarship but - do not underestimate him! Independent schools look for talent and they don't care where it comes from! Doing butterfly got her noticed! Usually, if an interview is about something they really like (sport) then they can just be themselves.

Good luck and he will have a good day whatever the outcome.

Is a clock still a clock if it has no hands?

ds had last year

Fazackerley · 29/01/2019 10:31

yes the parents that I saw were bog standard glossy blondes!

Really hope he enjoys at least some of it. Its a long day - 9-6 - I think even he might not manage football training tonight!

that would have been good advice bubbles! He's doing swimming as his secondary sport. He's regional level freestyle but not half bad at butterfly.
