College interviews

Disneygirl37 · 25/01/2019 09:58

My daughter has two interviews coming up for 6th form college coming up. She's gets quite anxious about stuff like this. I can't remember mine! And I've been self employed for a long time so I've not had much interview practice.
Can anyone give any pointers? Questions they might ask? I just want to practice a few with her and maybe give her a few questions she could ask too.
Thank you

Ds1 had his, apparently it is all a bit of a blur but they did ask why should we give a place to you? (work ethic) What are you doing outside of school to further your studies? ie are you really interested in this as a topic.

Ds1 is doing physics/computer science/maths/further maths so he could talk about his physics stuff and computer science stuff. Maths is a bit harder Grin

Luckily he did say to Ds that he has only come across 1 other student who has outstanding for their effort grade in every subject so that may or may not come up.

The sixth form is outstanding and over subscribed every year leading me to think these are generic questions they ask every student.

In our area, Hants, everyone goes to college, there are (more or less) no 6th forms attached to schools.
Colleges are non selective, except that individual courses have their own prerequisites.
The interviews here are to check you understand what you have signed up for and that it ties in with any aspirations.
So not an ability screening interview.

But eg. You realise what sociology actually entails, or, you say you want to be an architect but haven't picked Physics A level, that kind of thing.

Why do you want study History? etc

Why do want to come here?

They should not be arduous at all.

Our 16+ providers (including my own school) look at the courses they have applied for and discuss with the applicant on the suitability/reason for selection to ensure they have chosen the correct course/subjects for their desired career and predicted grades

What TeenTimesTwo says. A school near us was taken to the School Adjudication Officer for having interviews as part of the selection process and were told not to do it. We too have been told by ours that it is just to check subject choice against future career aspirations and current GCSEs and grades. It is a stressful time for them though, especially where sixth forms are over-subscribed, and people may end up holding offers for them with no intention to go there, meaning we may not find out whether students have a place until it all shakes out after results day.
