Our top choice!

I am lurking on other 11+ threads and some schools which exams held later have already proceeded to the interview round.

Awggg! The wait!!!

My daughter loves the school the best among others( she said she already made friends on the day and its felt down to earth with regard to everything about the school) however we will have to move(the savings might make up for some part of the stamp duty and moving cost). I am dreaming of her walking to the school the next 7 years, Guildford is a super lovely town and we could still manage to travel to the city daily for work. We have 3 weeks to decide and still have few interviews from some very nearby schools(mostly within 3 miles or so).

Congrats Greenleave, no doubt it's academic/music but difficult if you have to decide before you receive a full set of offers from all the schools you have applied to. You must be very proud of your dd.

Greenleave Congratulations to your DD. Hope all goes with the decision making.

It may have changed, but it certainly used to be the case that scholarships that were offered and turned down, where not then handed on to others. They used to go back in the pool for bursaries etc.

We received our offer on Saturday. Does anyone know how the tutor groups/ classes are organised? My DD is the only one going from her school as most stay on for senior, and I’m hoping she can meet girls locally (Hindhead, between Haslemere and Farnham). At RGS they arrange the tutor groups depending on home location, which is great for friendship and lift sharing!

Elevenplusplus · 22/01/2019 13:35

A current parent told me that classes are organised geographically. I agree this sounds helpful!

GU24Mum · 22/01/2019 19:00

I thought the RGS classes were done alphabetically by language choice?

The GHS ones are definitely done geographically. The GU1 postcodes are then allocated after that. notnigella, it depends where people are coming from each year but if you are Hindhead, you're likely to be in a class with girls from the other side of Farnham round past Haslemere/Hindhead to Witley/Godalming/Shere. But of course it could be different but you're not going to be stuck in a class with all the girls from Cobham and spend your weekends going there!

Fifthtimelucky · 22/01/2019 19:59

GHS also splits up the junior school classes, so that each year 7 class has a similar numbers.

@notnigella there will be lots of girls from the area going, I'm sure. Both my girls were the only ones from their primary school who went to GHS (although they both knew at least one girl in their year from various extra curricular activities). They made new friends very quickly. The train is a good place for socialising and I recommend that your daughter attends the netball course at the end of the summer holiday as that's a good way to meet new people (and practise the train journey) before term starts.

GU24Mum · 22/01/2019 20:05

Not a reason not to pick it but the JS girls are split geographically in the same way so can end up being split so that some classes have lots of them and some only a handful. Well done to your DDs for getting in!

notnigella · 22/01/2019 21:26

Thanks GU24 and fifthtimelucky, I called the school today and they confirmed the home area split and said we would meet local girls at the new girls day in June. I'm sure it will all work out.

Congratulations who got through GHS. We are applying for our daughter this year (2020 admission in year 7) and appreciate if someone can help to provide some guidance on prep for entrance exam.

Many thnaks

Fifthtimelucky · 02/04/2019 22:24

Not sure there's much preparation to be done really. It's just the sort of English and maths they will do at school anyway. No reasoning. My girls were at a normal state primary and did not do anything special to prepare.

Greenleave · 03/04/2019 13:29

Hi Satvik, it was maths and english then an interview, everything was on the same day. English was heavier because it has comprehensions, writing etc. It was the best exam experience to my daughter and she said many times that she had a great day and already made friends. The staffs were very warm and helpful and down to earth. We love Guildford town and considered moving there as we have a very young second daughter and GHS has junior school too. In the end we went to a co-op option because it suits her best and only 20mins door to door from our current home. With regard to the preparation, its 11+, you need to prepare for it. You have about 10 months so there is time. Its no doubt one of many very competitive 11+ exams so prepare for the worst scenario just incase she had an off day. What happened to my daughter was she deliberately failed one of the schools we asked her to try while she didnt want to. She asked not to go for it after visiting the school however we insisted her to try and she just didnt answer any question during her interview. This is one of the lesson I have learnt for my second.

Many Thanks Greenleave and Fifthtimelucky. Very useful info Greenleave and thank so much for taking time to provide your input. Glad that it went out well for you. As suggested, will look for prep on 11+ and fingers cross, hoping for the best.

Thanks Again
Satvik
