Further maths A level

DD is in year 12 taking maths, physics and chemistry and working at A*/A standard in all three. She was dissuaded from taking further maths despite an A at GCSE for reasons we've never fully grasped but went along with as it wasn't essential for her future plans.
She's really enjoying her maths course and is now leaning towards taking it at degree level but of course the lack of further maths would then be a problem. School have indicated that it's too late in the day for her to add it to her timetable without huge upheaval. Is it totally unrealistic to think she could self study the syllabus (obviously with our help and support) and sit the A level as an external candidate? She'd clearly have some catching up to do but are we silly to even be thinking about it?

Errol I used the Oxbridge admission as their statement was used upthread to say that they didn't need FM. However to me there's a difference between the implication of that statement and the actual statistics.

What I was trying to say to the Op that they do need to look beyond the statements the universities give and see whether saying that FM isn't needed actually translates into offers.

Sure, ISWYM.

Another thought (if it's not been mentioned) - if the OPs DD can identify some courses she likes the look of, for which the entry requirements are in line with her expected grades, emailing their admissions tutors for advice re the FM might be informative.

Thanks for the further comments. I did actually mention the Oxford admissions data in my last post.
DD started the term wanting to do physics and has only just started thinking about maths instead. She's also wondering about doing a joint honours course - maths or physics with philosophy perhaps. She should be well capable of at least A*AA so should have plenty of options. She definitely wouldn't want to do a 3rd A level year though!
