I just wondered if this is a thing? It's my eldest's first year at secondary so I'm not sure.

I am a secondary school teacher and it is not the norm. I get a few presents usually from my form and they are greatly appreciated - I particularly enjoy the cards though and get plenty of those.

I am a secondary school teacher. Never had a christmas present from a pupil, nor would I expect one. I sometimes get a Christmas card written by a child, but I wouldn't ever expect it -maybe I get two or three a year from the 150 odd pupils I teach.
My Y11 leavers do often write me cards or give me small gifts at the end of their time at school - that is really appreciated because we have spent so much time together over the years and built a strong relationship.

dementedpixie · 17/11/2018 13:20

No I haven't bought for any of them. It's more a primary school thing

greencatbluecat · 17/11/2018 13:25

I've never bought an Xmas present for a secondary school teacher.

userabcname · 17/11/2018 13:26

Not typically - certainly not expected. I sometimes get a card or box of chocs from my tutor group but not every year.

I used to as a Head of year, and still do now as a form tutor at the lower end of school.

My DD never took in a gift for a teacher at secondary school, apart from one year when the form did a Secret Santa type thing and she drew the teacher. She did take in gifts when she left Sixth Form.

Not expected. I'm a secondary teacher and I have maybe had a Xmas present once or twice, and more often at the end of year 11 as a thank you. My DS has given a present to a form tutor who was leaving who he adored, and to teachers who took him on a trip for a week (just some biscuits for the staff room) but don't feel you should as it's not the norm...

For maths teachers yes. Everyone else no.

C0untDucku1a · 17/11/2018 13:46

Not expeced. Very rare to receive anythings. Always remembered when it happens. One year i received a christmas centrepiece from one of my form. Loved it. Last year one of my year 8 challenging boys gave me a share size packet of one of my favourite crisps! Very sweet!

cariadlet · 17/11/2018 13:48

I don't buy them myself like I did when dd was in primary school, but dd and some of her friends club together to get something for her form tutor.

Notquiterichenough · 17/11/2018 13:50

Noble that actually made me laugh

TwoGinScentedTears · 17/11/2018 13:54

I buy my son 3 £5 costa gift cards and give them to him to give to 3 teachers.

Last year he gave one to the DT technician, his form tutor and the lady that serves him at break time in the canteen. He wrote on it: Dear Miss, now it's your turn to be served. Merry Christmas.

BillywilliamV · 17/11/2018 13:59

No because DD would never speak to me again.

Pineapplepassion · 17/11/2018 14:39

My kids are in secondary and give to their form teachers, after school activity leader (running club and drama club) and to the cleaning ladies.
A card and small box of biscuits / chocolates or bottle of wine is very much appreciated.
I personally think it's a nice touch. I have friends who think I'm an idiot and don't do do the same but each to their own.
